Every night when I was growing up, my Dad would play his old 45s. The Temptations, the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Kool and the Gang, the Spinners…any and everything Motown. And of course Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. In the car with my mom, it was Elvis, Janis Joplin and the Rolling Stones.
I vividly remember eating popcorn with my family when we watched Michael Jackson moonwalk across the stage for the first time. I remember that night. I knew it was a big deal…I knew we were seeing something special. I was almost 6 years old when I watched that.
Fast forward to present day…I have a daughter that same age. If she was watching TV Sunday night she wouldn’t have seen a legendary performer moonwalking…instead, she would have seen a girl formerly known as Hannah Montana “twerking.” We get it Miley. You’re not a little kid anymore. But I wasn’t even sure what I was watching. I kept asking my husband, “what is she doing?? Why are there giant mice on stage? What is she wearing??”
Sure, there have been controversial musicians…The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Madonna and Prince. But do we really want to start comparing? Really Miley and Justin Bieber? I’m not impressed.
My dad would always tell me, “You kids have no idea what good music is!” I guess that phrase will carry on into every generation. ..because these kids have NO clue what good music is.
