The telephone game. Cue eye roll

If there’s one thing I have learned in life, it’s this: the telephone game is still played well into adulthood.  In fact, it’s much worse than when we were kids.  When we were younger, the telephone game started with a phrase like, “Mandy likes banana ice cream.” It would work its way through and end up saying, “Mandy hates banana bread.” It was all harmless.  But I remember being younger and thinking…”how does so much get twisted?? Why can’t people just repeat EXACTLY what is said and not make up stuff?”

When you grow up, the telephone game is no longer harmless.

For instance today, I was the victim of the telephone game gone bad.  A friend of mine asked me, “Hey, did you write a blog last night and then take it down?”  I responded, “huh?” She told me that there was a rumor that I blogged about a recent, local news story…posted the blog and then took it down.  The only response that came to my mind, “Huh?”

I had to laugh.  I had never, nor would I ever blog about a controversial news story that we air during a newscast.  That is unethical.  I also don’t take blog posts down…once they’re up, they’re up.

I think what disturbed me the most is this:  where the heck do people come up with this stuff? Does anyone understand that when you make stuff up about someone and then spread it…that’s defamation of character.

So many years after I first played the telephone game I still wonder the same thing: How does so much get twisted?

I remember one of my grade school teachers telling me: “If you don’t see it with your eyes…don’t spread it with your mouth.”  I think that’s a lesson plan that needs to be revisited by some.

It’s time to hang up the telephones. Game over.
