A busted lip and loose boots

I should have predicted the week would be interesting when, two days ago, Charlotte threw her head back while lying in front of me on the couch and slammed my lip into my teeth.  Of course it busted open and bled.  The resulting scab blended in nicely with the dark brown lipstick I borrowed from a co-worker last night.  The incident was nothing compared to what came the following day with the blizzard.  Today we finally could get our cars out of the driveway.  I think Dave would have used a dog sled, if necessary, to bust out of the place he’d been trapped with the kids for nearly two days.  The morning mission was to find boots for Mommy that don’t have suede or heels.  No luck at Target, Kohl’s, Famous Footwear, Shoe Carnival, Old Navy or Gordman’s.  No kidding, that’s how many stores we went in and out of… the last three Dave and the kids stayed in the car.  All the options were either too short, too expensive or unavailable in my size.  So we ended up at the second Target in Waterloo where I grabbed a decent pair of size 9 boots that are waterproof with fur trim.  The trouble is they’re a bit too big.  I need an 8 1/2 but they don’t come in half-sizes.  Thomas had blood stains on his coat for most of the trip.  He slammed his nose into the side of the cart at the first stop, upset he had to be strapped in, and the blood started running.  Later at Olive Garden… yes, we were really braving it… Thomas put his mouth on the salt shaker, stuck his hand in my soup and slobbered on more than one breadstick.  What a week!  The topper:  Tonight I’m doing the 10 with a bandaid on my finger.  I sliced it with scissors while attempting to cut open a Crystal Light single lemonade pack.  Why can’t they just make the packaging easier to work with!

Please tell me I didn’t just read the part where you borrowed lipstick from a co-worker. It’s the cold & flu season! That’s not right, no matter what you were trying to cover up.
What table were you sitting at in the Olive Garden so everyone knows not to use the salt shaker at the table???
Not that I don’t know that kids will be kids but…Well I’m sorry you had a rough day but this blog has too much detail, but I know, your honest and that is what everyone loves about you!!:-)

Hi Tara. This is the first time I’ve ever read your “blog” and I absolutely love it!! Don’t let the above comment get you down. I very much enjoyed the Olive Garden story. Hey, it happens. Anyone with kids can attest to that. Raising my three girls was the best time in my life. You must be about the same age as my oldest daughter, Jennifer, who dressed in the same way you described. My husband & I renewed our wedding vows in the Catholic church one saturday after mass and my oldest daughter wore the “Madonna Look” with fingerless lace gloves, a big bow tied up in her long curly blonde hair and earings that could have doubled as Christmas tree ornaments they were sooo big! Obviously this event was not a formal one. Anyway, I love your blog site and I plan on being a regular reader from now on as I have bookmarked it. Keep up the good work and by the way, I really enjoy watching you on the KWWL news @ 6 and 10. :)

I think all parents have days like this. The key is to remember the good ones while the not-so-good ones are happening.

A side note for justathought: I’m sure Tara and Dave told Olive Garden about the salt shacker so it could be washed. Just a thought for you, did you ever think she could have just barrowed the lipstick and applied it with a clean lip brush?

Lighten up “justathought”…Tara just tells how she sees it…if you really knew all there is to know about eating out in restaurants, you’d never eat out!! Tara–I have trouble finding boots to fit right too. I always wait too long to go look for some and then end up settling for a pair that don’t fit right at all.

Tara–Can we get some happy news from camp Thomas? Here’s alittle secret, winter in Iowa will come again next year as well. Buy Boots early! :)

I just recently bought winter boots at Younkers in a size 8 1/2 on sale! I never think ahead either.

I bought boots on Tuesday, the day it started snowing. So, you are not the only “late-boot-buyer”!! We have some other things going on in our lives, mine is trying to work full time, and raise 2 small children while my husband is in Afghanistan for a year. Usually I am at the bottom of my list of things to do – including boots. My kids both had them in plenty of time!!

Get some winter insoles and put them in your boots, they will be warmer and also fit better. I’m wearing “last year’s” boots, like from five years or more ago, because I can’t find anything that I like that would be easy to walk in and also warm.

Oh, the lipstick thing kind of got me too, but maybe there is more to the story?

    Tara-
I’m very sorry if I expressed my opinion on your blog, obviously it was not welcomed by some (and probably even you). It won’t happen again as I will be moving on and not wasting precious time that I could be using on more important things. I wish you much luck with your two beautiful children. Merry Christmas!

I hope “justathought” doesn’t really move on, I think she said some things that others of us were thinking but didn’t have the courage to put into words. I’m sure Tara appreciates the positive and also the negative.

Everyone’s opinion is part of what makes this an interesting site. I check it out several times a day to see if Tara has posted something new and what is going on with Tara and her family.

Everyone needs to lighten up. None of us know all the answers.

Wow! The woahs of lipstick. I would borrow my friends without hesitation and she would borrow mine. Mascara too, which is also known as a no-no. We’ve been known to smack each other right on the ole lippers when seeing or leaving each other. My hubby kisses her too. Isn’t love and friendship grand? We have far bigger worries than a touch of germ from a friend we know and trust. “justathought” you are okay … keep reading and writing. As we learn through this blog — first instincts aren’t always the definition of who we are or where we’ve been ourselves.

A got a tip last year on a great place to buy boots – Blains Farm & Fleet. I got there Tuesday afternoon as the snow was starting to fly and there was still a large selection in my size. I’m guessing they are pretty picked over now, but you might try Blains earlier in the season next year. No, I don’t work there or know anyone that works there.

I understand about the boots. I fortunately was working as a nanny in Minnesota about 15 years ago and invested in an expensive pair of snow boots. They are still serving me well. They were a little too big when I got them so I wore thicker socks. As far as the lipstick goes, I think we have all done that a time or two. I know when I was younger, even during cold & flu season, I wouldn’t hesitate to share lipstick or chapstick with my friends.

I love your honesty, especially when it comes from the antics of Thomas. I can just see my son doing the exact same thing.

    Keep the blog posts coming.
