Charlotte’s birthday is six-and-a-half weeks away. I only know this because I just checked on my smartphone calendar. With a thousand things on my schedule between now and May 26, I need to get a jump on planning her celebration for turning 6. Today I confirmed through texts the deejay is available. Dave came up with the idea when he talked with one who did karaoke at the KWWL holiday party. A 2-hour children’s dance party! Think hula hoops and Hokey Pokey, Cha Cha Slide and Chicken Dance. Of course I’m all about a cheesy group dance–did someone say Macarena? So I can’t wait to take part. I am not above making a fool of myself in front of kids–and this group will be too young to think it’s uncool for parents to participate. Book DJ–check. Order invitations–check. Pray rain will not force a crowd of unruly children to party in our basement–double check.

Tara, Really a DJ for a 6 year olds party?? What will she have to look forward to when she is older? I see a future Prom Mom in the making. Ha!
Tara, this 78 yr old grandma thinks this is
a WAY COOL idea….
By the way, love the soft yellow jacket tonite on the news………also WAY COOL as the kids would say!
KWWL “Holiday” party?
Why is the Biggest Loser being filmed at the White House? Maybe KWWL can answer that since they are an NBC affiliate?
I agree totally with Kate! What will the “event” be like when your daughter turns 16?
It’s kind of a cute idea.
I certainly would keep it to the age group of 6 yr olds and not just for Mom to have fun…and it sounds like Mom wants the party!
I agree with Kate…You are a “prom mom” in the making…Deejay is over the top for a 6 year old…You could do the same thing with a Karaoke machine.
This sounds right up there with the “extravgant prom mom” to me. She’s six not 16!
A DJ/dance party for a six year old, you have got to be kidding.
That means it’s also a boy/girl party, correct? Six years old? Sorry, but I don’t agree with your idea of a birthday party like that for a six year old. I agree with Bev, she’s not 16, she’s only six. I think you should rethink this Tara/Dave, it’s really “over the top”, as Jennifer says. Kate and NE Iowa Mom said, “what will you do for her party when she gets older (16)”?
Mom in Dubuque said it very well in “Prom Moms”…..when talking about a 13 year old’s birthday party that she had issues with for her daughter to attend, what will you do when Charlotte is 7? 8? 13? 16? I’m sure a movie, picnic in the park, slumber party with cake, ice cream and six candles, would also be fun, but a dance with a DJ? Good luck is all I can add!
Agree w/everyone else. I’m going to be 71
and have never had a party like the one planned nor would I want one. W/your mother in the education field, what are her thoughts on this wing-ding? Save for prom dresses? save for the next birthday party. Don’t forget you also have a little guy who is going to want or must have something as big or bigger than Sissy’s.
Totally agree that a dance with a DJ for a six year old is just buying into all these other inappropriate things for kids today. It’s right up there with the Toddlers and Tiaras moms. Kids need something to look forward to when they are older.
I must agree with everyone else! You are THE PROM MOM!
Tara, I think this is a great idea, and I hope the party turns out to be fun for all involved. My 7-year-old son loves to dance, and if I could have figured out a way to line up a dance party for his last birthday (something that wouldn’t be too expensive or glitzy, and with kid-appropriate music and dances), I’d have done it. For the record, we are VERY conservative on spending for luxuries and material things; I don’t think your party sounds out of line at all. Whether it comes across that way to others will probably depend on what kinds of extras you throw into the mix (goodie bags, etc.) Oh hey! As far as goodie bags go? How about a hula hoop for everyone!
Oh, I have to add something, for commenters who have suggested “boy/girl” overtones to this party. Have you seen six-year-olds dance? They do it in groups. It’s like a room full of jumping beans. My husband and I went in to play guitar and sing for my son’s kindergarten class last year. The kids danced almost nonstop for a half hour, and it was a complete blast. Tara, be sure to include “Twist and Shout” on the playlist.
I think this is a fun idea for a 6-year-old’s party! How is having a party at home with a DJ any more extravagant than renting out a room at a play place or going to a pizza place? When you look at the cost/kid, I’d say it’s definitely a more economical route to go. You can do your own food/cake, and having someone else in charge of music frees up the parents to tend to kids and food. Calm down, people!
AWESOME idea, Tara/Dave! The cost of a DJ dance party can’t be much (if at all) more expensive than a Chuck E. Cheese party. It is also fantastic that you are encouraging the kids to be active and do something fun. As far as the criticism about a boy/girl party I just don’t see a problem with it. The kids spend all day together in school and playing all summer long and this isn’t like an evening “lights-out” party. At six years old the kids don’t think a thing of it. I say, “GO FOR IT”.
BTW – can I come and dance too?!?!?!
