Six years ago tonight I was big. Like 225 pounds of a pregnant lady big. I delivered Charlotte via C-section the next day. This many birthdays later, my daughter is now the vivacious and high-spirited kindergartner I envisioned when she was cramped in my belly at over nine pounds a week past her due date. Tomorrow I will give birth to the party that sounded good in the planning stages but is shaping up to be two hours of chaos. Of the 22 kids invited from her class, almost all are coming. Of the 20 or so neighbor kids and siblings I included, almost all are coming. So my assumption that maybe half wouldn’t be able to make it due to the holiday weekend was way off–39 children RSVP’d yes. Throw in my family, adult friends and some parents… let’s just say the cupcake cake includes 75 and the 14 large pizza order breaks down to 112 slices. Before you write about the ridiculous nature of the whole shindig, let me explain two things about my party strategy where my kids are concerned: First, if possible I refuse to leave classmates out. It breaks my heart to see children’s reactions when they learn (usually in the cafeteria) that they’re not invited to a particular birthday celebration. Second, if there is something I am going to spend money on it’s not going to be a pair of expensive shoes for Mommy or a designer watch for Daddy. In our house, we had kids knowing our resources would shift to them. And more than 50 of our new best friends, in this case.
P.S.-I may revise these rules come Sunday if our yard or house is trashed. The latter should it rain!

start saving for their college education now and you can afford those new shoes or watch soon then you think.
Good luck…that’s a whole lotta people!!!! And hopefully it won’t rain!
Happy Birthday Eve Charlotte!
Kudos to you Tara for your thinking…I commend you up & down for what you wrote how no child will be left out no matter what the cost or amount of children attending. Not everyone is gracious enough to think that way.
Hope it all goes well and DO enjoy the DJ, I think that many kids/adults will have a blast!!
Sorry. Should of read “sooner then you think.”
Happy Birthday Charlotte!!!! Have a great day and Tara sure bet you will reminisce a bit on this day also. Have a fantastic party!!
Hope it’s a SPECTACULAR 6th BIRTHDAY BASH for Charlotte/family/friends.
The only problem I see about this party is that she’s only 6! Hopefully you won’t try to top each party each year or you’ll be one of those parents on the reality TV show giving their child a summer home at the age of 15! Hahaha…anyway, you have a wonderful and big heart and while it will be tiring, I pray for you that it will be fun for all ages, no meltdowns, and no rain! (If it rains, I wouldn’t blame you if you melted down!) You and Dave are great parents! Enjoy!
Tara,
I too applaud you for including all classmates for the party. I am an elementary teacher and have see TOO MANY times the hurt look on some kids’ faces when they are not included.
I have to agree with Dee and I’m also concerned about all the chidren in Charlotte’s class who due to cost are unable to have such a lavish party. You set the standard pretty darn high.
I hope it went well and I’m sure it’s a party that no one will ever forget!
Happy 6th Birthday Charlotte, it’s hard to believe you are six years old already, you are a beautiful young lady with wonderful parents and a very adorable brother!
