One day I woke up and couldn’t breathe out of one side of my nose. Now it happens on a regular basis, often with a throbbing pain on one side of my head. I assume it’s sinus headaches but have yet to confirm that with a doctor. My mom was kind enough to buy me a pulsating nasal irrigation system, but I returned it when it proved to be too much of a time commitment. It had to be cleaned after every use and required distilled water to avoid contamination–like that brain-eating amoeba story that surfaced in the past year linked to Neti pots. So the most I do to treat it is an extra strength aspirin and a nap. What works for those of you who know the feeling?

My Family use the netti pots – we have a filter system for our drinking water and use that water (otherwise, distilled water is easy to purchase & use); after use the netti pots go through the dishwasher with the sanitizer feature. For the relief it brings is so worth the minor inconvenience.
All you have to do is go to the nearest pharmacy and get the nasagating bottle and mix some baking soda & sea salt and lean over the sink or in the shower and rinse the nose out. I do it twice/day and it keeps the sinus infection away (most of the time). It’s worth the try.
I’ve been doing it for years. I had sinus/septum surgery, it has worked pretty well, it is not a walk in the park surgery however. Also, DON’T SLEEP with the windows open like some weather men/women say you should do, that doesn’t help things and is probably the worse thing you can do for yourself.
Tara,
Have you tried mixing a 1/4 tsp of salt in an 8 oz. glass of warm water? Use an infant nasal aspirator to flush the nostril out.
A HOT shower, even if the middle of the night..ibuprophen,rest and HOT coffee!!!!
Interestingly enuf, I used to have more when employed which makes me think STRESS may be a contributing factor!
Thankfully I don’t get stuffy on a regular basis but when I do I never seem to have the time to do the nasal flushing so I take the easy way out by taking 2 Sudafed 30mg tablets.
If this continues get yourself checked for allergies. I had numerous sinus infections before being treated for allergies. Just a thought.
I’ve found that HOT SHOWER (even in the middle of the night), ibuprophen,& rest & yes, cup of HOT coffee, too, help!
Actually I’ve had less sinus headaches since retiring…….maybe, stress plays a part???
Often chiropractic helps.
Do what JS says. My husband has had the septum surgery also, which has helped some but the nasal rinse with a irrigation bottle and the salt and soda water mixture. Makes yoiur sinus feel so good afterwards, But what works for some don’t work for others. I hope you find relief, and possibly get checked for allergies.
It’s amazing what is in a person’s nose besides boogies. Doing the seas salt/soda rinse will also help to rinse out all the air borne garbage that is in the air that we breathe in. It does help all year round, even with colds, flu, etc. And the biggest, dust if your around a lot of that. When you get done being at a fair or a place where it’s dirty, rinse your nose, you’ll be surprised at what goes in and then comes out!
Hot shower let the water pulse on your face and also the back of your head. Not a big fan of those netti things–I end up making a big mess.
