So Nana/Papa found an upright, Kimball piano for $200 in Peoria, buying it from an older couple near where they live. My parents rented a small moving truck one-way and drove it up today with stuff they want me to unload at our next garage sale. Charlotte was so excited as she had no idea the musical instrument she hopes to play was coming. But whether it gets to the basement, that’s the rub. I recruited a recently graduated co-worker and two of his friends to move the piano from the truck to our basement for $100–after a local moving company was going to charge $95 an hour with a 2-hour minimum plus gas. I didn’t want to pay more for the move than what the piano costs. Well it was so heavy we had to get two neighbor guys to help, five men total, move it just to our garage. Papa oversaw the process–with two knee replacements Nana wanted his hands off it. I still paid my co-worker and his friends the promised amount. So now I’m out $100 and the piano is still sitting in our garage. Guess I should have gone with the professionals.

If your basement is a walk out get a couple sheets of plywood and roll it down the hill. You will still need the strong young men to do this. No walk out basement then as we did rethink where it will go upstairs. This will actually be better when you are saying practice! Been there, but it’s worth it. Oh it is possible to hold your breathe while your child is playing in front of 50 people. Enjoy, for this will pass so fast Twinkle Twinkle little Star will soon be Bach.
It will probably need to be tuned too. Good luck with the move; does it have to go into the basement?
Basements aren’t really a good location for a piano. I agree with Ruth regarding practicing. I had to practice a hour each day, sometimes I hated it, but sure glad she made me do it. Thanks mom!
Well of course your co-worker and friend deserved to get paid!! Trust me back surgery is not fun, been there, done it, and when lifting heavy stuff like a piano men and women need to use extreme caution and be careful.
You can rent a piano mover (a piece of equipment) which puts it on wheels and will make it much easier to move.
Just got done watching Phil Vassar playing piano on the beach. Wondered where the piano had ended up at or if it was still in the garage?
