You should have seen the look on my face this morning when I raced to the outpatient surgery floor to meet with the doctor after Dave’s surgery and he handed me the piece of WIRE he had just removed from my husband’s throat! I also have two copies of the picture above to verify its size. Let me back up. I could not take the kids to daycare until 8am and Dave’s procedure started at 7:30am. So at 5:30 this morning we loaded in the car and drove Daddy to the hospital, dropped him off, came home, went to daycare and all the while the surgeon was digging in Dave’s throat for what we all thought was a chicken bone only to come across a 2-centimeter piece of metal instead. Yes, it was inside the chicken strip he ate two Fridays ago with the kids. My nose biopsy was not fun. Charlotte’s scalp mole removals pained me. The ear tube procedure for Thomas was trying at times…. But this?
Daddy getting two surgeries a few days apart to cut out a piece of wire embedded in his throat. This pretty much trumps them all. Guess what was on the menu today for the kids’ school lunch? Chicken strips, no kidding.

Sue the heck out of them, Tara! not only is it a metal piece, where was it before the chicken nugget??? gross, huh? that’s just plain unacceptable!
Wow! What a day (week, month, year?) your family has had. Hope all goes well with recovery. Scary!!!
Just so glad it’s out! The idea that such an unexpected and freaky little thing could cause such trouble makes me think it’s not that off the wall to want to stay home in my chair and never leave the house.
As for you, yea, the trip’s back on:) LOL
I feel sorry for the chicken strip company - never mess with the husband of a TV News Anchor . . . especially one from Iowa!
Seriously - wow. Glad Dave is OK.
Still too scary. Glad all is well and hopefully you and Dave can have a great
train trip.
It was a WIRE???? I’m so glad you have a lawyer, I have a feeling the chicken strip company is going to be in trouble. Big trouble. It’s bad enough that a grown man swallowed it, but what if it had been a child? A wire. That’s just beyond scary. I’m so glad Dave is going to be OK.
Deb
This is so beyond unbelievable. I think you have quite a case and I hope you sue. This could have been a disaster if it had been a child. Hope your hubby has a speedy recovery!
That’s beyond disturbing. I think the fact that one of your kids may have ate it is more than enough to win the case. That’s scary. I hope Dave is feeling better! Bring on the ice cream and Jell-o!
I had a teacher way back in 2nd grade, I think, that swallowed a chicken bone and it made it to her intestines where it proceeded to do major damage. She missed most of the school year as I recall. I’m thinking a wire would have been equally awful. It’s bad enough the way it was. Hope Dave is feeling better and that you have a quiet rest of the year. Thank goodness for medical insurance!!!
OH MY Goodness,
This is terrible.
I hope Dave is feeling better. You sure have had a rough year….
Take care.
Unbelievable! Maybe you should give us the name of the company who packaged the strips and we will make sure not to buy from them ever! You and Dave must still be in shock. Go on the train trip and REALLY enjoy yourselves. You deserve a rest.
Please share the name of the company so we can keep our families safe!
Why is everyone so sue happy. Contact the company, have them pay your medical expenses and time lost for work and move on! What are we teaching our children when we are vindictive to something that was NOT INTENTIONAL? The company did not intentionally put that wire in that chicken strip. Makes me sad you have jumped on the “sue” bandwagon. I would have thought you would be just more sensable and just want your expenses covered and move on with life.
LuAnn, we don’t know if/what she is sueing for…I knew someone would critize for this. Even if all she is asking for is medical and lost wage expenses, it’s in the best interest to hire a lawyer to handle the matter.
Tara and Dave, I’m glad this didn’t turn out any worse! My kids will only be eating cut up chicken strips from now on!
I know this is not a “blog” - but it was mentioned that they had “already contacted an attorney”. Alls I’m saying is why not contact the company and see how they want to handle it BEFORE telling the world you have an attorney. I’d get an attorney if the company was not willing to take care of this, but again, when you say “We already have contacted an attorney” it looks like you are not a big person and not able to handle things on your own. That is all I am saying.
Good for you LuAnn. I agree totally. Our society has become sue happy. Contacting the company and explaining the situation and asking for medical bills would be the way to go for me. It was an accident, not done intentionally.
Just because they contacted an attorney doesn’t mean they are going to sue. I’m sure the attorney will be the one contacting the company, I know if something like this happened to me I wouldn’t know what route to take.
As an employee for a company that makes chicken nuggets among other food items. It is best that she contact her attorney and let them handle it. I can tell you that if she calls the company herself she will get nowhere. Also I know that the nuggets did not come from us as we just started making ours last week!!
OK LuAnn~ Would you feel differently if it was your husband or kids? This wasn’t a hair it was a WIRE!!! Huge difference. Don’t be so quick to judge until you’ve walked in those shoes!!
I would think that the food company would be more than willing to pay expenses for medical care, loss of wages and pain and suffering. Any time you eat a food product from any kind of factory, you are taking a chance that anything could have gotten mixed in with it, could be this was in the chicken before it was butchered. Hopefully something like this will never happen again, glad it wasn’t either of your children or some other child, it’s too bad that it had to be Dave, wishing him a full recovery. I agree with LuAnn, but Tara and her family will have to do what they feel is right for them, we can’t judge them for the action they take, this has been very tramatic for all of them, hope they have a great trip and Dave has no other problems now that it has been removed.
Oh My Gosh, how awful Tara and Dave since I have been reading your blogs for over a year now. I am so glad they got the wire out and here you thought it was a bone. Sure glad it wasn’t one of the kids but too bad it happened to your family. i hope you have a better rest of the year and that all turns out fine. You and Dave go on that 9 day trip and really enjoy it cause you never know when stuff like this happens. I am wishing the best for you all and hope your situation turns out all o.k.
Take Care and I mean it.
Who says it was not intentional??? What about the lady that sued McDonalds for her coffee being to hot. When she bought the coffee she knew it was gonna be hot or the average person would know that. When Tara bough the chicken strips no how would you ever expect that there would be something in the chicken, let a lone a wire!!! That company is liable for what comes out of its factory and it is their responsibility to make sure that their foods are safe!! It is always better to let an attorney handle these things rather than do it yourself. If she were to contact the company herself they would probably just offer her a free bag of chicken strips!!
Oh Tara, I feel so bad for you having to go through this chicken wire trauma. And now having to deal with the backlash or readers. Do what you have to do and what you feel comfortable with. I pray all turns out well in your favor. And that God protects your family from any more health issues. Hugs to all your family, you guys need them!
I can’t believe there was a wire in the chicken. It will make me think twice about eating “boneless” (wireless) chicken strips/nuggets.
On the upside I applaude Dave for letting you take a pic of him in the hospital and posting it on your blog. My husband would never let me take a pic of him in the hospital and if I did he would have a major fit if I posted it anywhere.
Enjoy your trip.
Well, at least the company was telling the truth. The chicken strips are “boneless”! I hope that got a chuckle out of you.
I do hope the company is contacted by the attorney soon because with 3 children of my own and a daycare in my home a lot of chicken nuggets get eaten. We will be on a strictly no chicken nugget diet until I hear of a recall or you post that the matter has been handled!
We went out to eat today and almost had chicken nuggets………then thought of Dave and decided, nah.
