Surrounded by Monsters Interview

Howdy All!

Long time no talk eh?  Well the first really part of the season with my real job is done so now I can get back to spending a little more time with my blog!  I’m glad you all are still reading.  First up an interview I orginally did back in May with Traci Parson of Surrounded by Monsters.  I saw their video on YouTube and automatically got in contact with the band.  Two brilliant things about this band.  #1 their music rocks.  #2 they are an unsigned band and I like to focus on unsigned bands when I can.  So here ya go!  A nice interview with Traci from Surrounded by Monsters!

Boris release statement on the Earthquake and Tsunami

One of the bands that I’ve gotten turned onto over the last year from friends is Boris.  They simply are with out borders or definitions and some of the most original work I’ve heard in years!  I love everything they have done from their own albums to collaborations with experimental artists like Merzbow and SUNN O))).  I had been speaking with their publicist lately about getting their two new albums for review and setting up an interview with the band.  Then the earthquake and tsunami hit.  Like most of us, I was dumbstruck by the devastation and hart broken by what I was seeing but it felt so far away from me.  I didn’t know anybody in Japan apart from an old co-worker here at the station who I heard from and said she was OK.  Then it hit me BORIS!  I immediately emailed their PR guy to check on him.  He told me he had just spoken with them the night before and they were OK.  I was relieved to know that they were alive, healthy and doing alright.  Below is their official statement.

Boris expresses our condolences to everyone who passed away because of current unexpected earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan, and also our deepest sympathies for all of the people who have a hard time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

“All Boris members, our families and staff are safe now. Thank you very much for kind words and thoughtful messages.

Hope,
Boris”

In light of the recent events both of their new albums are going to see a delay, I don’t think any one will blame them for that at all.  I’ve asked several times if there is anything that we here in the States and here in Iowa can do to help Boris and the people of Japan and it’s been reiterated to me that this is still the best way to help the people of Japan.

Donations to aid the disaster relief efforts in Japan are being taken by the American Red Cross HERE, or by texting REDCROSS to 90999 for a $10 donation.

I wish them the very best and hope that people of Japan have a speedy recovery and rebuilding.  I also urge all of you to donate time, money or services to the people of Japan.  My thoughts, hope and positive vibes are being sent their way!

Robotanists does Radiohead’s new album in 24 hours!

OK, so most people that know me know that I’m  not a fan of Radiohead at all.  “Creep” was the best song they’ve ever done in my opinion and that’s stretching it.  But I do love me some keyboards and female vocals and I’ve got a FREE download here for you from L.A. Indie-Pop faves the Robotanists.  From what I’m told they sound a bit like Mazzy Star meets Portishead so consider me sold on the idea.

So I think you should download their Radiohead cover album NOW all it requires is an email address and it’s yours!  They also have a new album coming out that you should check out too!

Kickhunter – All In Album Review

By now most people think I probably only review stuff that is in the genres I tend to gravitate towards, and while that’s true I try not to do that consciously, it just so happens that 9 times out of 10 when I turn on my iPod to start reviewing stuff I get sucked into something else and forget what I was gonna do.  So finally I have something that maybe for a wider demographic than my usual review.  Please let me present to you, my loyal reader: Kickhunter.

From checking out their website I’ve come to the conclusion that they are German, usually I’m more accustomed to Einstruzende Neubauten for German music but this here is a whole other ball of wax.  When the “CD” (I say CD because would it sound weird to say MP3 download of the CD?) kicks in my ears are treated to some Hammond B-3 love.  Oh and I do mean love on this record.  Kickhunter is what I would call a very honest rock and roll experience.  Their love of classic rock is so evident that from the opening riff of this record I’m instantly transported back to the late 70′s early 80′s of rock.

It’s all here from 70′s riffing to 80′s hair metal type ballads.  This album could easily fit right into anyone’s collection that loves Bon Jovi, Enuff Z Nuff or some of Brett Michaels more ballad driven stuff.  The album does have great production on it too.  The drums are clean and well done, the double kick is easily my favorite part of the record, and the guitar tones are great as well.  Strong production on this leaves a great taste in mouth quite honestly.  This isn’t something I would normally be drawn to, but it’s done extremely well.

The vocals are something though that takes me out of it a little bit.  Our lead crooner here often times sounds a bit too much like the bands of the mid to late 80′s a little too hair metal for me and not enough of the 70′s rock and blues vibe that the band often seems to drift towards.  That’s not to say that his vocals aren’t strong, quite the contrary, I’m sure fans of AC/DC would be all over this guys voice, but for me it’s just not my cup of tea.  The female vocals on the record are solid too, a smokey, blues filled image comes to mind when I hear her sing on this record, it’s not until the misguided cover of Blondie’s “Call Me” that I think the band misses their mark and actually takes away from  the record as a whole.  In this writer’s opinion they could have picked a million different songs to cover and come out with a better end result than the Blondie song, it just doesn’t translate well to the genre they are working in, especially when you consider Blondie was a reaction to the stagnation of radio.

All in all Kickhunter’s All In is a rather enjoyable piece of music that I would like to highly suggest to fans of Classic Rock, KCRR, Bon Jovi, Poison, Lynard Skynard and others of that nature, it’s a rocking good time!

Tom Green Invades the Cedar Valley!

Howdy all!  A week or so ago I got the chance to talk with Tom Green on the phone about his up coming shows at Jokers in Cedar Falls, Penguins Comedy Club in Cedar Rapids and his final stop in Iowa at the Diamond Jo Casino in Dubuque.  I’ve been a fan of Tom Green’s work since I first discovered him on MTV back in the day.  Well I didn’t discover him but I saw his show on MTV and loved it.  I also loved his work in Road Trip which is still one of my favorite movies.  So it was a real treat and honor to get to talk to him on the phone.   I wasn’t sure how the interview would go, it could go any way, and knowing some of Tom’s other hi-jinx I was a little nervous going into it.  Click the links to find out how it went and to get some of Tom’s ideas on what’s next for media!

To find out more about Tom and what he’s been up to and for an updated tour date schedule be sure and hit his web page: TomGreen.com.  Also follow him on Twitter for some special interactions with his fans during his trip to Iowa!

My Conversation with Sascha of KMFDM

You know, it’s not every day you get to chat with someone who has had a unique impact on your life.  KMFDM are one of those bands that were a game changer for me.  They came into my life at the right time and they combined everything I was looking for in music.  I’ve seen them perform numerous times on many tours.  I’ve met some of the guys at various times but I’ve never had an in depth conversation with KMFDM’s founder and man behind the curtain Sascha Konietzko.  Recently I got to talk to Sascha on the phone and we dicussed everything from gear to children to tours to the controversy surrounding the band after the Columbine shootings in 1999.  I had a blast and I hope you do too with my interview with him.

I hope you enjoyed this interview as much as I enjoyed doing it.  Be sure and pick up KMFDM’s latest WURST collection and look for their new album in April on Metropolis Records!

My top 10 albums of 2010!

In my spare time from writing for the KWWL blog I picked up a writing gig writing for ReGen Magazine where I write about music that doesn’t always fit here on the blog.  With that in mind I had to put together a top ten list for 2010 for the other writers to vote on, so this list I’m about to put up here isn’t going to show up there in it’s entirety so I figured I’d share it with you all.  These are the top ten albums of 2010 that impressed me and made me want to listen to them over and over.

10. :Wumpscut: – Siamese

9. Fear Factory – Mechanized

8. Massive Attack – Heligoland

7. Noblesse Oblige – Malady

6. Veil Veil Vanish – Change in the Neon Light

5. I:Scintilla – Dying & Falling

4. Killing Joke – Absolute Dissent

3. Ego Likeness – Breedless

2. Front Line Assembly – Improvised Electronic Device

And my top album of 2010 goes to:

1. Dirty Little Rabbits – Dirty Little Rabbits

This album is a beautiful piece of work.  It’s absolutely stunning.  Stella Katsoudas sings perfectly on this album and the music is so catchy, you’d never guess that it’s Slipknot’s own “Clown” behind the drum kit.  If you haven’t yet picked up this album, go out, nay, run to your nearest retailer and pick it up today!  I should also disclose that Stella and I have been working together on her new Sister Soleil album, I’ve been doing some video production for her as well as working on a music video for her as well.  So in an effort to stay honest with you guys, I’m absolutely floored by this album even before our collaboration and my interview I did with her this summer!
