Euthanasia Sparks Debate

Euthanasia is always a heated topic for animal lovers. Personally, I believe it should only be done in extreme circumstances. For instance, very ill dogs who are suffering or vicious dogs who cannot be rehabilitated and are clearly a danger. I don’t think a dog deserves to be killed simply because he/she isn’t adopted soon enough or because they learned bad behavior from a bad owner. Like people, animals deserve a second chance.

This is an article about the most recent debate concerning a pit bull named Oreo who was put down.

Dog + Child = Very Tired Dog!

One of my good friends has a young daughter who loves playing with Cubbie.

Rileigh turns seven the beginning of December, and I love how excited she is to see Cubbie when she comes over. (Cubbie is more than excited, too).

The grown ups talk while the “children” play. Rileigh runs back and forth between my couch to my loveseat, getting Cubbie to follow her back and forth and back and forth. She also throws things, hoping he’ll fetch it. But Cubs prefers to be chased. They literally run around the house (which of course I don’t mind one bit).

Last time Rileigh offered Cubbie part of her chicken nugget (he bit down a little too hard on her finger), so later I let her give him one of his doggy treats instead of bothering her while she ate!

What’s great about Cubbie, is he’ll pretty much let children do whatever they want to him, and he doesn’t get upset. He’s had toddlers pull his fur and ears and practially smack him while trying to “pet” him. He just takes it all in stride.

After playing with Rileigh, Cubs is completely worn out. He pants and pants and needs a break. I love it!

It also makes me realize (even more than I already do) that I’m not ready for kids! Cubbie is utterly exhausted after 45 minutes, and Rileigh can keep going and going! At least Cubbie takes lots of naps. :)

It’s great watching Rileigh and Cubbie play. I think they are officially buddies.

Here are some pictures Rileigh suggested I take. :)

Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving was much like I predicted. :) Cubbie was on “give me attention” overload!

When we first got home, Cubbie ran to both my brothers before chasing the cats. Then my parents were nice enough to watch Cubs while I spent time with some high school friends. I had a great time catching up in downtown Oelwein!

I have to say, though, I did not sleep well Thanksgiving Eve. My mom was right, the air mattress was nice, but it was still an air mattress and I was freezing! I had to steal extra blankets in the middle of the night! When Cubbie was under the covers, he definitely helped keep me warm.

On Thanksgiving, Cubbie spent the morning with Grammy and Grampy watching the parade. Then my mom, one brother, Cubbie and I watched a movie while the food cooked. (We had a Thanksgiving supper so my brother could go to his girlfriend’s family’s first).

After the movie Cubbie and I went on a walk on the new bike trail by my parents’ place. It was a little windy, but good for both of us to get outside and exercise before eating!

As the day went on, Cubbie spent more and more time in the kitchen. He could smell it was going to be a big meal. When we first started to cut the turkey with an electric knife, Cubbie ran under the table and hid! But I think when he realized it was cutting the turkey, it was worth it for him to hang as close as possible to catch any stray pieces. :)

After supper, Cubs and I drove back home so I could get up early for work on Friday. It was a quiet, nice Thanksgiving. It was great!

Getting Ready for Thanksgiving

Cubbie and I are heading home to Oelwein for Thanksgiving. We plan to leave this afternoon so I can catch up with old high school friends tonight before a family day tomorrow!

Cubs always loves going to my parents because he gets attention from Mom and Dad AND he gets to “play” with Kit Kat and Minnie (my dad’s cats).

Holidays are extra fun for Cubbie because the house is full of people. Besides my parents, both my brothers are home, plus my one brother’s girlfriend. Lots of people to give Cubbie attention. :)

My mom is very excited about this air mattress she bought for us to sleep on. (Yes, I have to sleep on an air mattress, and I’m not even camping)! She keeps talking it up to me about how it even has a head board. Maybe I’ll be impressed…

I’m more interested to see how Cubbie reacts to sleeping on an air mattress. I don’t think he’s ever even seen one before. I’m already preparing myself not to get much sleep tonight! :)

Once Cubs and I wake up my mom will want us to watch the parade with her. Hopefully we’ll see some of the local students performing.

Then, I have to admit, I’m more like a guy on Thanksgiving. I like to plop on the couch and watch football. Don’t get me wrong, I do help (a little) in the kitchen, but my mom knows what she’s doing and I don’t. That’s one of the things I love best about the holidays… good home cooked food!

Between the air mattress, the food and the people, I’m sure I’ll have a few stories to share about our Thanksgiving holiday!

Cubbie is sleeping on my lap right now. I assume he’s saving his energy for when we arrive home later. :)

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

Haircut for the Holidays

Honestly, Cubbie’s hair was getting VERY long. Not to mention his nails needed to be trimmed and his teeth needed a better cleaning than he lets me do in the bathtub.

With the holidays coming up, I decided it was the perfect time to trim him up! That way, he’ll look nice for pictures.

This was the longest he’s ever gone between haircuts. So it looks REALLY short. I like it because it’s more manageable, he looks pretty (boys can be pretty, right?) and it’s so soft!

I sent a cell phone picture of him to my mom. She said, “Oh his little legs look so skinny without all his hair!”

I love petting him, but it’s especially addicting when his hair is this soft!

While I always think he’s cute, I have to admit, I also think he looks a little goofy right after he gets a haircut. :) His hair is so short, he just looks different!

I like it best after about 4-6 weeks. It’s not too short or too long. I think a lot of people are the same way with haircuts (at least I am). Before I started growing my hair out, there was always a small window after I got it cut where I thought it was the perfect length. Not too short, but also not too long to get on my nerves. (Speaking of getting on my nerves, we’ll see how long I can grow my hair out before I either wear it in a ponytail most days or decide to chop it again)! :)

With a fresh haircut and nail trim, my little bear is all ready for pictures this holiday season!

Fundraiser for K9 Unit

The Chickasaw County K9 Unit is hosting fundraising events to alleviate a strained budget for the K9 dog. Children and pets are invited to area fire departments to take holiday photos with Santa in front of a fire engine.

The cost is a free will donation. Photos will be emailed to you. The goal is to raise $14,000 during the next two years to maintain the cost for k9 Deputy Ringo and assist in the set-up expense of a new K9 deputy.

The photo opportunities are at various fire stations in Chickasaw County during several weekends in November.

For more information call 641-394-3121.
