Beautiful Weather!

What beautiful weather!

Cubbie is sufficiently worn out. We went to the dog park with my friend/co-worker Michelle and her dog Bailey. Cubbie chased a ball, made some new friends and even got some treats out of the deal.

After an hour, he was ready to go home and get out of the sun. I practically had to lift him in the car, he wanted to sit under it to be in the shade!

He rested on the cool hardwood floors at home for about two and a half hours, then we went on a nice long walk.

We love this weather! Unfortunately, it’s Iowa and the weather can still change in an instant!

Nail File Destroyer

I’ve mentioned before how Cubbie likes to rip stuff up. Whether it’s stuffed animals or paper, he just likes to rip and rip.

One of the odd items he likes to tear into is my nail files. I’m not really sure how it started, but now everytime I file my fingernails he practically starts salivating.

Before, he would climb on my lap and try to take them from my hand. Well, I put a stop to that. Now, as soon as he sees the nail file he jumps up next to me and just sits patiently while I file. When the nail file can’t be used anymore, I hand it over to Cubbie and he begins to rip it up.

I’m not sure if he likes the texture, or if it’s just something else to destroy. Maybe it would file his teeth!

It doesn’t take long for him to rip it up. I get pretty flimsy and cheap ones in a jumbo pack. He chews it into about three pieces, and then he’s done with it. Then I’m the one who cleans up the mess! :)

Trapped in the Basement

So, Cubbie and I had an eventful night.

Cubs fell asleep around his usual 10 p.m., but I was up later than normal and actually went to sleep around midnight.

At 2 a.m., Cubbie woke me up to go outside. When, I let him back inside, I left the kitchen door and the bedroom door open so he could roam around the house if he wanted. Most of the time he takes a little drink of water and then makes his way back to bed.

I was so tired I was back asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. I never realized Cubbie didn’t come back into the bedroom. At 6 a.m. I heard a bark. I was up for a second, and then I closed my eyes again. I heard a bark again, and then I heard a whine. I noticed Cubbie wasn’t in bed so I got up and walked around the house in the dark calling his name.

Granted, I was still partly asleep but I remember going into the living room and the kitchen and even standing at the top of the basement stairs. I didn’t see him anywhere and he didn’t make anymore noise . I thought that was really weird, but I figured he was in the house somewhere.

I crawled back into bed and again heard him whine. This time I got up and went into the basement, and there he was. He managed to open a gate in the basement (I don’t know how) and then the gate closed behind him and he was stuck. What a goofball! It was hard not to laugh looking at him stuck in there.

I assume it happened shortly after 2 a.m. when I let him outside, so he was down there for four hours! At least there was a blanket down there, so maybe he slept for awhile. All I know is I didn’t hear him bark until 6 a.m. and I’ve never been a very heavy sleeper.

I let him out of the gate and he actually stayed in the basement a little while longer, then I heard him run up the stairs and jump back into bed.

Who knows what he was trying to do in the basement.

Volunteers Needed!

The Cedar Bend Humane Society called me to ask for help spreading the word about needing more volunteers.

Last week, the humane society took in 36 dogs from a kennel in Nashua. Volunteers are desperately needed to help walk the animals between 9 a.m. and Noon.

Toys, leashes, collars and rawhides are also needed. The humane society wants to get the dogs used to anything they’ll experience in their new homes.

If you can help, please visit the Cedar Bend Humane Society on Airline Highway in Waterloo or call 319-232-6887.

Flower Cat

In case you missed it on the Saturday morning show, here are some pictures of a “flower cat” the staff at Petersen and Tietz Florist in Waterloo made as a birthday gift for Jennifer Hildreth.

The cat is supposed to resemble her own cat, Cooper. I think they did a great job!

CBHS Needs Help from Community

WATERLOO, IA – Earlier this week, the Cedar Bend Humane Society was involved in the voluntary seizure of more than 300 dogs from a commercial breeding facility near Nashua, in coordination with the United States Department of Agriculture, the Animal Rescue League and other Iowa humane societies.

The Cedar Bend Humane Society took in 36 dogs of different breeds, including huskies, boxers, labs, Italian greyhounds, pugs, Yorkshire terriers, beagles a poodle and more. There are a few puppies, but most of the animals are adults.

The dogs currently are not available for viewing or adoption, as shelter staff are still processing the animals and ensuring that they are current on vaccinations, groomed and spayed or neutered. They are expected to be available through the shelter’s regular adoption process in the next couple of weeks. Beginning next week, the animals will begin to be posted online at www.cedarbendhumane.org and www.petfinder.com.

Citizens wishing to help can direct monetary donations to the Cedar Bend Humane Society to help pay for necessary shots, spay or neuters and grooming for the animals seized. All these procedures are necessary for the animals before they are able to be adopted. The shelter also seeks donations of blankets, towels, toys and food, specifically Science Diet or Iams adult dog food and small bite puppy mix.

Volunteers wanting to help will be able to assist with cleaning and animal care in the coming days. Contact the shelter for additional volunteering information.

The Cedar Bend Humane Society is a nonprofit organization and the only full service animal shelter in Black Hawk County. For more information, please contact Autumn Ewoldt at the Cedar Bend Humane Society at 319.232.6887 or cbhsevents@mchsi.com.

I’m Back!

I haven’t posted anything for about a week because I just got back from Arizona.

Everyone down there told me it never rains (at least not all day), but it rained all day, everyday but one! I was really looking forward to sitting by the pool with a book, but that didn’t happen.

We visited Sedona (wanted to mountain bike, but it was down pouring). Another day it was still raining, but I went hiking anyway. The only day it didn’t rain we went hiking and to a spring training game.

Despite the rain and unusually cool weather, I had a fantastic time!

My parents watched Cubbie, and it was definitely hard to leave him. I’ve never been away from him for five days before. My mom said he did pretty good, but by Wednesday she could tell he was missing me. I missed him, too.

I was supposed to get home around 6:30 Thursday night, but it was closer to 8 because of delays at the airport.

But I made it back, and I was so thrilled to see Cubbie. It’s nice having him to come home to. Grandma and Grandpa did a good job wearing him out because he was exhausted Thursday night. He fell asleep around 9 p.m. and didn’t stir until 7 a.m.
