Playdate!

Zoey came over again to play with Cubster. She’s definitely gotten bigger, and she was a lot more playful.

The first time she seemed a little timid, but this time she was running all over the place chasing Cubbie. It was hilarious!

I also heard her bark. You can tell she’s a beagle! :) Cubbie would bark and then Zoey would bark and it went back and forth.

Zoey loved Cubbie’s toy basket. She kept pulling out toys and bones. My favorite part was when they played tug of war with one of his toys. Zoey was tugging and tugging and Cubbie was just standing there as if to say, “I can do this all day puppy. Keep trying to get it from me because you can’t!”

So cute! They played and ran and Cubbie was exhausted after an hour and a half. When Zoey left, he collapsed on the floor.

Staying Cool

With all the hot and muggy days we’ve had, Cubbie has discovered a new way to stay cool.

Even though it’s humid, Cubbie still wants to go on his nightly walk. When I get home he is itching to go. He stares at the door until I’m ready to go.

While we’re walking, he doesn’t seem phased by the humidity and mugginess. Still, I don’t let him go for more than about 20 minutes because it is so uncomfortable outside.

As soon as we get back to the house, he hits his water bowl and then goes to the bathroom.

He found the coolest floor in the house, and surprise, surprise, it’s right in front of an air conditioning vent!

Not So Indestructible

My mom ordered some new toys for Cubbie. They’re supposed to be indestructible.

The toys came in a set of three, so we decided to give one to Cubbie now and save the others for the later. The toys are stuffed animals, but instead of stuffing on the inside, it’s a water bottle.

The idea is for your pet to crunch and crunch on the water bottle. After awhile, you just open up the toy (there’s a velcro spot on the bottom) and replace the water bottle.  When my mom saw these toys, she figured they were perfect for Cubbie because he always steals my water bottles to chew on.

Well, I gave Cubbie one of the animals. It’s a fox, or should I say was a fox.

Without stuffing, the toys are supposed to be indestructible. There are very few toys Cubbie can’t destroy.

Cubster wasn’t content just crunching on the water bottle. He wanted to get the water bottle out. Within ten minutes, I found a hole in the fox’s head. Cubbie was tugging and tugging trying to get the water bottle out of the hole he had made!

I called Mom and told her I had good news and bad news. The good news, Cubbie really likes the toy. The bad news, it already has a big hole.

He still hasn’t gotten the bottle out… so he’s still playing with it! Slowly he’s making the hole bigger and bigger. I think soon he will get the bottle out.

I unintentionally/unknowingly made a child cry! Oh no!

No one likes to be responsible for making a child cry. Granted, I didn’t purposely upset this child, but I still feel badly.

Earlier this week my friend Michelle and I were shopping at Crossroads Center in Waterloo. I was just looking for clothes (like I usually do), browsing and just casually walking around in a store. I really didn’t notice anything unusual.

I tried on some clothes and whittled down my purchases. At the checkout line, the woman behind the counter said something about a child being upset.

She said he recognized me and started talking about wanting to see Cubbie. According to the lady, the mom tried to explain I wasn’t working today and didn’t have Cubbie with me.

From the story I heard, the child was so upset  the mom had to take him out of the store!

Even though I had no idea what was going on until after the fact, I feel so terrible! If I had known, I would have gladly said hello and talked about Cubbie.

If you ever see me out and about and want to say something, don’t feel bad, even if it is my day off. I’m used to it, and I jump at every opportunity to show off pictures of Cubbie. :)

Hopefully I’ll run into the mom and child again sometime and can say hello.

Vacation for Me Equals Quality Time with Grampy for Cubbie

With no weekend shows during the Fourth of July because of Wimbledon, I decided to take a long holiday.

Thankfully, Mom and Dad were once again wonderful enough to babysit Cubster. It actually worked out very well. Two days before I left, my dad retired. So Grampy and Cubbie had lots of bonding time! :)

I left Friday, July 2 and got back Friday, July 9. I flew to Phoenix, and then we drove to Las Vegas. We stopped at the Hoover Dam along the way. After Vegas, we spent a day at Fossil Creek in Arizona and we went to a Cubs/Diamondbacks game.

The day I left, I called Dad from the airport to make sure Cubbie was doing okay. Dad and Cubbie were at a pond. No one believes me when I say this, but my dad catches turtles. He builds his own traps, and people ask him to get snapping turtles out of their ponds. I remember growing up in Strawberry Point and all the other kids in the neighbor wanted to come see the turtles my dad caught.

So, when I called Dad was out checking his traps and took Cubbie with him. Of course I wasn’t thrilled. I feared Cubbie would lose a paw! Not that I don’t trust my dad, but Cubbie is curious.

Dad said Cubbie was just running around the pond and even getting into the water (I was shocked because he doesn’t normally like to swim). While we were on the phone Dad said Cubbie found some frogs and was scared when the frogs jumped. I got on the plane smiling imagining Cubs with the frogs.

When I got back, Dad filled me in on another adventure at the pond. Apparently Cubbie got in what we refer to as his “tornado mode” where he runs super fast in a circle. Dad says he was doing that, and then he jumped in the pond but got stuck in mud. I guess Dad had to help Cubbie out of the mud because it was so deep! Dad took Cubbie home and gave him a bath outside, but he only had cat shampoo! So, he used cat shampoo on my dog. Yes, he did smell a little funny when I got back. My favorite part is right after the bath, Dad was trying to dry Cubs off and he went and rolled in a worm (like he usually does). So much for the bath. :)

It was very difficult being away from Cubbie for a week, but I think Dad really enjoyed having a buddy around during his first week of retirement. I really appreciate his help, and all the time he spends with Cubbie.

As much as I hate leaving Cubbie, I was able to relax and enjoy my vacation knowing he was in good hands! Todd is so great to me, and I got to spend time with my friend Emily who used to work with me at KWWL but now lives in Tucson.

Duck Story

A True Duck Story from San Antonio , Texas
Something really cute happened in downtown San Antonio this week. Michael R. is an accounting clerk at Frost Bank and works there in a second story office. Several weeks ago, he watched a mother duck choose the concrete awning outside his window as the unlikely place to build a nest above the sidewalk. The mallard laid ten eggs in a nest in the corner of the planter that is perched over 10 feet in the air. She dutifully kept the eggs warm for weeks, and Monday afternoon all of her ten ducklings hatched.

Michael worried all night how the momma duck was going to get those babies safely off their perch in a busy, downtown, urban environment to take to water, which typically happens in the first 48 hours of a duck hatching. Tuesday morning, Michael watched the mother duck encourage her babies to the edge of the perch with the intent to show them how to jump off. Office work came to a standstill as everyone gathered to watch.

The mother flew down below and started quacking to her babies above. In disbelief Michael watched as the first fuzzy newborn trustingly toddled to the edge and astonishingly leapt into thin air, crashing onto the cement below.

Michael couldn’t stand to watch this risky effort nine more times! He dashed out of his office and ran down the stairs to the sidewalk where the first obedient duckling, near its mother, was resting in a stupor after the near-fatal fall. Michael stood out of sight under the awning-planter, ready to help.

As the second one took the plunge, Michael jumped forward and caught it with his bare hands before it hit the concrete. Safe and sound, he set it down it by its momma and the other stunned sibling, still recovering from that painful leap. (The momma must have sensed that Michael was trying to help her babies.)

One by one the babies continued to jump.. Each time Michael hid under the awning just to reach out in the nick of time as the duckling made its free fall. At the scene the busy downtown sidewalk traffic came to a standstill.. Time after time, Michael was able to catch the remaining eight and set them by their approving mother.

At this point Michael realized the duck family had only made part of its dangerous journey. They had two full blocks to walk across traffic, crosswalks, curbs and past pedestrians to get to the closest open water, the San Antonio River , site of the famed “River Walk.” The onlooking office secretaries and several San Antonio police officers joined in. An empty copy-paper box was brought to collect the babies. They carefully corralled them, with the mother’s approval, and loaded them in the container.. Michael held the box low enough for the mom to see her brood. He then slowly navigated through the downtown streets toward the San Antonio River . The mother waddled behind and kept her babies in sight, all the way.

As they reached the river, the mother took over and passed him, jumping in the river and quacking loudly. At the water’s edge, Michael tipped the box and helped shepherd the babies toward the water and to the waiting mother after their adventurous ride.

All ten darling ducklings safely made it into the water and paddled up snugly to momma. Michael said the mom swam in circles, looking back toward the beaming bank bookkeeper, and proudly quacking.

Like all of us in the big times of our life, they never could have made it alone without lots of helping hands.

Why would u even ask me that? I’m insulted! Every time something goes missing around here, everybody looks at me! Fyi, I don’t even wear that shade – it doesn’t flatter my complexion &  it tastes terrible.
