Doggy Dip

I took Cubbie to the Doggy Dip at the Falls Aquatic Center in Cedar Falls. BUT, he doesn’t like to swim.

I already knew it would take a lot for him to get in the water. I let him run around for awhile, but then I got tired of chasing him around the edge of the pool.

I tried to get him to at least wade into the zero depth area, he barely got his paw wet and that’s all he wanted with the water!

Yes, while all the other dogs were swimming, my dog was content to watch from the side!

Oh well, I think he still had fun.

Crash’s Story

I have a special connection to a dog featured on our Sunday morning pet segment on August 14th.

A couple months ago, I was informed about a dog left chained to a car in a garage. The family moved away, leaving the dog behind.

I don’t know the full story, but I was told the dog only got food and water because a neighbor walked across the street to give it to the dog.

I got a call asking if I could do anything. Through some effort, I was able to track down the owner, and after several days I got permission to take the dog.

A friend who had a large enough kennel and I drove out of town and picked up the dog. Immediately, he just wanted attention. He was dusty and dirty, but overall seemed okay. I was struck by how friendly the dog was. All he really wanted was to play!

I started calling him Crash because he tended to crash into me unintentionally while he was walking. He is very strong, but he is a big baby! He is a pitbull dog with brindle coloring. Believe me, if I could’ve taken Crash myself, I would have. Instead, I took him to the humane society hoping he’d find his way home.

Crash is now available for adoption at the Cedar Bend Humane Society in Waterloo. Before he was officially on the adoption floor, my friend and I visited him. He was so happy and excited. Really just a loving dog who kept wanting to sit beside me on the bench!

I just want to make sure Crash (known as Forrest at the humane society) finds the good, permanent, loving home he deserves.

I won’t go into every detail of the situation, but I will say this is one of the brightest spots of my job, having some ability to hopefully make a difference.

Let’s find Crash a home! You can see the video of Crash on the Today in Iowa Weekend page. Just click on the pet segment from 8/14. He loves to roll and have his belly rubbed. :)

Puppy Mill Meeting

Iowa Friends of Companion Animals is having a Town Meeting August 18th at 6:30 PM at the Coralville Public Library to talk about Puppy Mills inIowa.

The animals kept in these mills are treated very badly and we would like to educate Iowans about puppy mills. Iowa ranks 2nd or 3rd in the number of puppy mills in the country.

Outdoor Fun

Even though we only have about a month left of summer… Cubbie and I have enjoyed the weather and being able to spend time outside.

I thought I’d share some pictures of some of Cubbie’s outdoor fun recently.

Several weeks ago we went with friends to Backbone State Park. We enjoyed the beach area and grilled some yummy food. Even Cubbie enjoyed part of a hot dog.

A few days ago we went back to one of our favorite places to walk because I can let Cubbie off his leash. Cubbers loves the chance to sniff around and run and roam. And I love I don’t have to worry about any roads being nearby!

We just take a trail around a pond, and Cubbie even dips his legs in the water to cool off. I so fun to see him run around, plus he’s exhausted after.

We both prefer running through green grass than white snow. Hopefully it will be a nice fall and winter will hold off. I’d be fine with no snow this year! :)

Adoption Event Today

Waverly Pet Rescue is scheduled to be at PETCO in Waterloo today (Sunday, August 14).

The event is called “Back in Black,” hoping to get animals with black fur adopted to a permanent home.

The event is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For some reason, animals with black fur are less likely to get adopted. Some speculate it’s because you don’t see the animals as well in the shelter.

Others believe it goes back to superstitions about “black cats.”

As the owner of a dog with black fur (my little furry baby)… I can say Cubbie definitely brings me more good luck than bad luck!

Pillow Party

Who needs one pillow when you can have three?

Almost every night around 10 p.m. Cubbie heads to the bedroom. Even if I’m still doing stuff around the house, he knows when he’s ready to sleep.

The other night I was on the couch reading my book, and when I walked into the bedroom, Cubbie was hogging three of my four pillows.

Really, Cubbie? Three pillows? I guess one just wasn’t enough!

Do you think I moved him and took one of my pillows back? Absolutely not. He’s too spoiled. :)

I guess I should be grateful he left one for me!
