Quick Paws for a Little Dog — Fun at the Park

Cubbie and I went to the park this week so he could run around. He spent about an hour chasing frogs, chewing on branches and just running. He certainly looked like a “from hunting” dog at certain times.

Cubbie is considered a small-medium dog, but he has long legs and he’s quick! What I love about going to the park — he gets to run and then he’s exhausted when we get home.

Cubbie running

I also spotted a momma goose (or maybe dad) sitting on a nest. She followed Cubbie’s movements very closely, but he didn’t seem to notice her, which was fine with me.

I didn’t want my dog to get attacked by a goose just for being curious!

Pet Pride in the Park — Coralville

Iowa Humane Alliance and Coralville Parks and Recreation cordially invite area families, pet owners and all other fun-loving residents to join them for the 3rd Annual PET PRIDE IN THE PARK “Grande Adoption Event & Furry Fiesta Pledge Parade” on May 5th from noon to 4 p.m. at S.T. Morrison Park in Coralville.

Capitalizing on the vibrant energy and colorful traditions of the May 5th Cinco de Mayo holiday, this year’s PET PRIDE IN THE PARK is designed to offer local residents an afternoon of animal-oriented fun and activities, while providing local shelters and rescue groups a venue for adopting out their animals, raise much-needed funds and boost awareness for their organizations.

In addition, this year’s event will also promote the planned opening later this year of the Iowa Humane Alliance Regional Spay/Neuter Clinic in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids Corridor.

Designed to appeal to the entire family, including those with or without four-legged members, this year’s “Pet Pride” event will be MC’d by popular local radio personality Tommy Lang from KCJJ.

New this year is the “Furry Fiesta Pledge Parade,” which will wind its way through the park and nearby streets of Coralville. Participants can register to walk in the parade beginning at 11:00 on May 5th or they can pre-register on line by visiting www.iowahumanealliance.org. The event will also feature more than a dozen area animal adoption groups with a menagerie of adoptable pets for prospective families to meet.

The Kids and K-9 Carnival will include games and prizes for dogs and their owners. There will also be a wide range of vendors with pet-related products, from grooming aids, to specialty foods, to pet toys and more. Attendees will also have an opportunity to learn about some wonderful pet- related businesses, animal rescues and other organizations serving their communities.

The entertainment agenda features fun-filled pet contests throughout the day, a reptile extravaganza by Witty Kitties, Inc, Latin music and dance.

For owners wanting to micro-chip their pet, Iowa Humane Alliance will hold a microchip clinic and chip pets for just $20. They will also be clipping nails for just $10.00.

Admission to the event is free. Tickets for the Kids and K-9 Carnival are only 50 cents each. Pets are encouraged to bring their owners, as long as they behave themselves…. Dogs should be current on all vaccinations and on a non-retractable leash no longer than 6 feet in length and all other pets should be in carriers. All funds raised will go towards low cost spay/neuter programs and helping homeless pets.

Last year’s PET PRIDE IN THE PARK drew over 300 attendees, with more than two dozen area retailers and vendors. Every year, the annual Pet Pride event draws more people, more pets, more attention and more awareness to the needs of companion animals in Eastern Iowa. Area residents are encouraged to mark their calendars now for what promises to be a fabulous warm-and-fuzzy fiesta guaranteed to give the entire family an unforgettable afternoon of music, activities and all-round animal-friendly fun!

Mark Your Calendars — Dog Day at the Ballpark is set for Sunday, June 10th

I’m once again teaming up with the Waterloo Bucks baseball team for a “Dog Day at the Ballpark.”

This year’s event is Sunday, June 10th at 3:05 p.m. at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo.

Tickets are $10 for you AND your dog. Dogs will need to sit in a special section of the ballpark.

Join us at 2:30 for a “parade of dogs” around the field. Plus, Connie Apling with K-9 Playhouse will be there to do an agility demonstration before the game gets underway.

A limited number of t-shirts will be available for sale, and I’m starting to get some great items for a silent auction you can bid on between innings.

All proceeds go to the Cedar Bend Humane Society.

Here’s a look at what you can expect for this year’s shirts. Thanks again to Ross at The Shirt Shack in Waterloo for helping me out!

Cupcake Contest

Again this year I competed in the “celebrity” cupcake eating contest at The Isle Casino Hotel Waterloo.

I ate seven cupcakes in three minutes for $700 for the Cedar Bend Humane Society.

With 15 seconds left, I literally shoved the last cupcake in my mouth.

While I could never be a professional eater (especially considering the winner ate 72 cupcakes in six minutes), I cannot complain about an opportunity to raise so much money in such a short amount of time for a charity that’s very important to me.

I have the check in-hand to give to the Cedar Bend Humane Society!

Doggy Door

When my parents added the screened-in porch to the house, they also made another addition. A doggy door for Cubbie.

Now, he can freely go from the house to the porch to outside without anyone having to open a door for him.

I went to Des Moines a couple weeks ago to visit a friend on my days off, so my dad watched Cubbie. My dad used the opportunity to teach Cubbie how to use the doggy door.

Cubbie turns six in June, and he’s never seen a doggy door before. I figured he would get it, but I wondered how long it would take and what he would think of it. My dad says he used treats to help coax Cubbie through the door. (Cubbie will do anything for food).

On Easter, I got to see Cubbie use and enjoy the new door built just for him. Once he went through it safely a couple times, he was happy to go back and forth.

I’m pretty sure he loves having the freedom to do what he wants!

Wagner Family Easter 2012

It was a wonderful Easter at the Wagner home again this year.

My parents recently added a screened-in porch to the house, so we spent most of the afternoon enjoying the new porch with our new lawn furniture.

We enjoyed a great meal, exchanged Easter baskets, my two brothers and I flew a kite (which we haven’t done since we were little kids) and we just relaxed.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a family holiday without Cubbie. He didn’t seem very excited by the kite. He spent the whole time just sitting in the grass, but he did enjoy the Easter baskets. He had to explore everybody’s goodies.

Because Eight Hours Just Isn’t Enough

Cubbie likes to sleep… A LOT.

He literally sleeps on every piece of furniture in the house. From the couch to the chair to sprawling out on the bed.

When he’s not on a walk or playing with one of us toys, he’s probably sleeping.

When it’s a little too quiet in the house, he’s somewhere sound asleep.

He sleeps all through the night with me, but apparently 8-9 hours just isn’t enough!

Not only does he sleep a lot, but he also snores a lot. He often wakes me up in the night because he’s so loud.
