Pet Licenses

As Cubbie and I prepare to move to a new house soon, I stopped by the Waterloo City Clerk’s Office to get the address for his pet license updated.

I thought it might be a good time to remind people many cities require a pet license for cats and dogs.

Here’s the information for Waterloo:

Any owner of a dog or cat within the city limits is required to license their pet the first of each year, or at any time a pet has come into the possession or ownership of the applicant or which pet has reached the age of six months. The owner will need to provide the breed, sex, age, color, markings and name of each pet, the address of the owner and provide the most recent rabies vaccination, the type of vaccine administered and the date the dog or cat shall be revaccinated. A written certificate from a licensed veterinarian shall be required to prove that a dog or cat is incapable of breeding and has been vaccinated for rabies. The fees for licensing dogs and cats are as follows:

Date Altered Unaltered
January 1 – March 31 $ 5.00 $10.00
April 1 – December 31 $10.00 $20.00

Upon payment of the license fee the owner will be provided a license which will be in the form of a metal tag. The tag must be attached to the collar of the dog or cat and be kept on the animal at all times. The license expires on January 1st the year following the issuance of the license. Duplicate licenses are issued at a cost of $2.00. No license is required if the owner of said dogs or cats has a valid State pet shop license, State Boarding Kennel Operator’s License, State Commercial Kennel License, State Hobby Kennel License, State Commercial Breeder’s License, or State Dealer’s License.

Cedar Valley Humane Society Pets of the Week

ABEL — five-year-old Rottweiler Mix

Originally, Abel came to us in the middle of April because his owner passed away. He was recently returned to us because he’s quite the escape artist, and his new owners didn’t have a good enough fence to hold him. Abel is a very confident boy who will need an owner (and a fence!) who can handle his size and strength. He loves rawhides and never turns down an offer of one. Abel has a face you won’t forget–he always looks like he is on the verge of a really big belly chuckle. We think he would do well in a home with children, and we would love for you to come meet him as a family. Abel would benefit from basic training, but he but does well on a leash.

BUSTER — one-year-old Weimaraner/Siberian Husky

Buster came to us at the end of July because his owner didn’t have enough time to spend with him. He is a very calm dog who doesn’t jump a lot or otherwise use his size to his advantage. This gentle giant is smart, and we think he would be a breeze to train. (He tends to pull a little on the leash, but he already knows sit!) Buster is used to being around cats, and we think he would be great with kids. Stop in and meet this long-legged sweetheart today!

SNICKERS — nine-year-old Domestic Shorthair/Mix

Snickers and Angel came to us at the end of April because the owner was allergic. These two kiddos are littermates, so we want to keep them together. As MeowMates, you can bring them both home for only $90! Snickers and Angel get along well with other cats. Snickers likes to be brushed. Angel loves to held and cuddled. These two make a purr-fect pair!

LOUIE LUNA — nine-year-old Domestic Shorthair/Mix

Louie Luna came to us at the end of May as an owner surrender. He enjoys cuddle time and being loved on. If you come and meet Louie Luna you can see why we say he loves his treats! He may be a little older but we are sure he feels young at heart! If you give him a chance, Louie Luna will charm you with his antics.

Cedar Valley Humane Society Second Chance Thrift Store

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) – From clothing to dishes to furniture, there’s lots for sale at the Cedar Valley Humane Society Second Chance Thrift Store.

The store is located at 617 Center Point Road Northeast in Cedar Rapids and opened in May.

“All of the revenue comes to the animals at the humane society, so what that does it provides us with a consistent source of revenue,” said Jan Clarke with the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

While the store benefits the humane society, it’s not just for pet owners.

“Everything you see in the store has been donated to us. So we have some pet supplies, but that’s a small part of what we do,” said Clarke.

Kurt Noack managers the thrift shop. He has two dogs of his own, and he said the community is rallying behind the store.

“We have a tremendous amount of donations. We have shoppers that come in two to three times a week,” said Kurt Noack.

The store is closed Sundays and Mondays. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Humane society staffers said the thrift store is just another way to engage the community in the humane society’s mission of helping animals.

“What the shoppers and the donors do is provide a voice to the voiceless, the animals, and the animals appreciate it,” said Noack.

Detroit Dog Rescue

I saw a story on NBC Nightly News on Detroit Dog Rescue, and I wanted to share it with all the pet lovers in eastern Iowa. It’s a great example of a few people working hard to make a big difference.

Here’s a link to the actual story.

Pearl the Puppy

My friend Sarah got a new puppy at the beginning of July!

Meet Pearl the boxer and English bulldog mix. For such a young age, she is extremely well-behaved and she’s already learning how to sit, shake and stay. Such a cutie!

Sarah talked about getting a dog for a long time. I’m glad she finally did, and I think she’s very happy with her decision.  She’s already a “dog person.” :)

I spent lots of time holding her and playing with Pearl. She is so gentle and a real sweetheart.

Expect pictures from a Cubbie/Pearl doggy playdate coming up within the next few weeks.
