If I let him, Cubbie would eat almost anything. He is only allowed to eat his dog food, some approved treats and natural bones every once in awhile.
When I have food, he always wants some. I read in a book green beans are good for dogs. So one night I made green beans for myself with the idea Cubbie could finally eat a little off my plate. I gave him a green bean, and he refused to eat it. He looked at me as if to say, “Of all the food on your plate, you give me THIS? A lousy green bean?”
With Cubbie’s most recent pancreatitis troubles (which I assume is spurred by his getting into the trash can behind my back) he takes three pills a day. I have to give him two antibiotics and his generic Pepcid AC.
Cubbie treats pills like green beans. He tries everything in his power NOT to swallow these pills.
I’ve tried everything from mashing them up in his dog food, to holding his mouth shut and rubbing his throat so he swallows (not sure if this is supposed to work, but I thought I saw it somewhere). Cubbie is so sneaky. He’ll act as if he’s swallowed the pill, then 30 seconds later it’s on the floor.
I don’t understand how he is outsmarting me! It shouldn’t be that hard for me to get my dog to actually swallow a pill. Maybe he’s a genius!
lol
One night I gave him his Pepcid and felt very confident he actually swallowed it. About five minutes later, he walked up to me and spit the pill out at my feet! Another time I specifically sat in the kitchen and stared at him for several minutes to make sure the pill was down. After waiting for a significant amount of time, I was certain it was down so I went into the next room. A little later I went back into the kitchen and there was the pill sitting on the floor. I am astonished how he does this!
Giving Cubbie his pills should take less than a minute, but sometimes it goes on all night!
Recently, the only way I’ve gotten him to actually swallow his pills the FIRST time is to hide them in small pieces of cold hot dogs. I’m not sure if he doesn’t realize the pill is in there, or if he just doesn’t care because he’s getting a little piece of hot dog. Either way, the pills are actually getting swallowed, so I’ll take it!

maybe cubbie is hiding the pills under his throat. the way we get our our dog cody to swallow pills his to out it in his mouth, hold his neck back while holding his nuzzle/mouth shut and then we blow in his nose and when his tounge comes out that usually means he has sallowed it, hope this helps!!!
I tried putting my dog’s pills in everything I could think of, but she spit it out every time. I finally put the pill in peanut butter, and it goes down every time!
I enjoy your Cubbie tails. I can relate to you about house pets. For the time being I don’t have any but I have had my share when my kids were growing up. I had to deal with them being sick, cleaning up their messes, house training but it’s well worth the love they give you back.
I always stuck them in cooked noodles or cheese slices and our dog would finally take them. Just a suggestion.
Get Pill Pockets…they’re at vets all over and they may even have them at pet stores.
My lab begs for his every morning!
wrap the pill in a small piece of cheese and it will be in his stomach in seconds.
I put my dogs pills in peanut butter. I take a small spoon and put about a tablespoon of peanut butter on it and then hide the pill inside. They never even realize it’s there. I tried sticking it in all other kinds of food and this is the only thing that worked. It’s easy and they love it.
I put my dogs pills in cheese and he takes it down real well. I just say its time for medicine (morning and evening) and he is waiting patiently with no hestitation!
Our vet gave us a ‘pill pusher’ to get pills down our cats throat. It is basiclly, a really long syrienge - it works great because you can get it as far back in their throat as possible. Our cats too get smart and realize they are getting a pill, but this ‘pill pusher’ has really made the job easier.
My dog takes 2 pills a day. I wrap them in a little ball of braunschweiger.
Our vet gave us a miracle called Greenies Pill Pockets. This to me was a life saver! I have 3 yorkies and when my 5 yr old started having seizures about a year ago he was put on a seizure medicine. I tried different techniques that failed. He was like cubbie, spitting the pills out at my feet. They’re are chicken & beef flavors and they come in 2 different sizes. I buy the capsule size in which can be divided into 3 parts so i don’t leave the other 2 yorkies out and they can have a healthy treat too! You can get them at your vet or your local pet stores. I found that the vet’s office was affordable for me!
Just wanted to let you know to try mini marshmellows they really do work and my dog loves them.
I just wanted to let you the pill pockets are AMAZING!!! My malatese had to go on pills for bacterial infection and she soon figured out what was hidden inside the treats. I tried hot dogs, bread, cheese, peanut butter…even meatloaf! she was so smart she would push the pill out of whatever i had given her and go on her merry way. It brooke my heart trying to force the pills in her mouth and make her keep it there. After reading about the pill pockets on here I told my boyfriend to ask about them on the vet after we got lola fixed…..THEY WORKED BETTER THEN EXPECTED! she gobbled them right up and didn’t even ONCE seem to notice there was a pesky pill hidden in them! i will FOREVER be a fan of pill pockets (and they smell REALLY good to!)
