A day of Honor

I had an amazing opportunity this week to travel with 90 veterans on the Cedar Rapids Honor Flight!  These gentleman were all so incredibly sweet.  Hearing their stories of service to our country was incredible.  They’ve been through a whole lot and this trip was such a nice “thank you” to them for all they’ve done for us!

The countdown begins!

I am about to check out for the day, and it dawned on me that I have a mere seven working days left at KWWL!  Wow!  It seems like an eternity since I accepted my  job offer in West Virginia, but in other ways, it has completely flown by.  I am very grateful for my time here, but am so looking forward for this career advancement opportunity, mountain beauty, and showing Christ’s love to a whole new bunch of people!

This weekend, we squeezed in a family photo shoot with the lovely Natasha Chughtai.  Here’s a couple of the photos she’s posted so far–I can’t wait to see the rest!

Tomorrow, I’m quite thrilled to be traveling to Washington, D.C. on the Cedar Rapids Honor Flight.  These guys are just so incredible–what they’ve lived through, the stories they have to tell, and the incredible debt we all owe them for their service.  It will be a long, but cherished day!!

A tribute

To date, I’ve been in the TV news biz for 6 1/2 years and have worked with probably over a hundred people in my various newsrooms.  There are people in each one that have left an impression on me–from Stephen Johnson at KHQA to Aileen Simborio, Terry Weathers, and Mike Hesher at KSN, and Ron Steele, Tara Thomas, and Dylan Sires here at KWWL.

I wanted to take a second to really thank Dylan.  He has pretty much been “my” photographer for the past several months.  We’ve worked together on and off all three years both of us have been at the station, but since one of our reporters left last fall–he and I have been paired up for stories just about four days a week.  You get to know a lot about a person when you work with them that often!

dylan

Dylan is kind, hard-working, and creative.  He is extremely good at his job and always willing to help troubleshoot editing or camera issues for anyone in the newsroom.  I will sincerely miss our burrito days together at Panchero’s, or going on crazy adventures like climbing to the top of the Wapsipinicon Mill with me (at the time I was pregnant mind you!), or somehow finding something interest in the most mundane of stories.  He feeds off of me for advice on things, and I feed off of him.  I’ll never forget when we stood out in Traer doing a story about wind turbines with frigid 10 degree temperatures and -30 wind chills with 40 mph wind gusts–we were about literally getting blown over trying to shoot video.  I was doing a field stand-up which I had to shoot about 10 times because my face and eyes were getting pelted with sleet and I could hardly stand up straight in all that wind!

I will sincerely miss working with Dylan.  He’s just an all around good guy, and incredibly gifted at what he does.  (Something he could never get enough kudos for!)  He also has aspirations of a career in music, and I have no doubt whatever path he chooses, he will excel.   Best wishes to you, friend in all you do!  It’s been a real privilege to work alongside you.

Thankful to be your mommy

I can never think it enough–but time sure does fly when you’re having fun.  The past 17 months have been an incredible joy ride like none other, thanks to our wonderful son Drake.  Yes, he’s lead to sleepless nights and episodes of panic, frustration and tears, but above all he’s warmed our hearts and opened our eyes to a whole new kind of love.  Every day I look forward to hearing him say a new word, make a new silly face, hear his laugh, chase him around, and get his precious tight little hugs and sweet kisses (when he doesn’t say no! to them ;) )  On this Mother’s Day, I’m just really thankful to be Drake’s mommy.  He’s a terrific little guy who teaches me new things about myself, and makes me strive to be better all the time…setting the best possible example of love, support, and faith.  Love you Drake!

So many great people!

KWWL will hold a unique spot in my career for a lot of reasons–some of those include my great co-workers and the amazing people I’ve met along the way and had the pleasure of telling their stories.  There are so many it’s hard to go into them all…but I’ve really enjoyed working with a number of local school districts the past three years.  In particular, Tony Voss in Hudson and all the staff I’ve talked with in Independence district.  I’ve covered a whole boat load of stories about the attempt to pass a bond for building  a new school in Independence, after five failed bond attempts in the past decade, a bond measure was finally approved and a new school is being built.  Thanks to the relationship I’d formed with Indee staff and their wonderful PR lady Jenny, they hooked me up with an exclusive tour inside the building this weekend.  It really is a beautiful facility and students and staff there will really have a treasure for years to come.  It was so nice to see the nearly finished product after covering the story for months, since I will miss the grand opening this fall.  An Indee photographer, Charlie McCardle was kind enough to take some photos during the tour.

A little about them…

This is a weekend we celebrate moms, but I can’t really think about my own mom without thinking about my parents as a unit.  This summer, they’ll celebrate 37 years of marriage.  Their relationship, like many of us, has sure seen its ups and downs.  But somehow, they’ve weathered every storm and gotten stronger for the wear.  I’ve told them many times that they are such an awesome example for Floyd and I.  They are the best of friends and there’s nothing they couldn’t tell each other (even when they don’t agree!).  Floyd & I are that way too.  We love strong, have fun, and celebrate life’s most happy occasions with all the joy possible and hold each other close in times of sadness and frustration.  I have not a single doubt in my mind that Floyd and I would not be where we are today (in so many realms) without a couple of things:  the love of each other, the love and incredible support of our families, and a binding faith in God.

But bringing the circle back around…when I took my trip down memory lane this week, I was thinking mostly about the journey Floyd and I have gone on in the past 12 years.  But here’s another hugely important component of where we’ve been and where we’re going:  my mom and dad.

I’ll never forget the day I moved into my college apartment freshman year in a sweltering 119 degree record setting heat.  My parents just melted as we moved my things in.  They knew I really wanted to attend a private college for the close knit atmosphere and small class sizes, so Webster U. in St. Louis was a perfect fit, not too far from home.  Nearly every home basketball, they watched me cheerlead.  They paid mountains of tuition bills and expenses for books, food and rent, and never once complained.  They took Floyd and I on vacations, helped put HIM through college even before we were married, and were always right there never questioning what they could do to help:  financially, emotionally, you name it.  When we got married, I got the fairytale wedding every little girl dreams of. As I pursued a master’s degree later on, they were there for me every step of the way.

When I set out on this crazy television career, my parents answered every question I had about “becoming a grown up”, helped finance our first house while mind you still helping pay the bills my meager beginner’s reporting salary couldn’t muster the money to cover.  When Kansas came calling, they packed and unpacked boxes with us, and hung pictures on walls.  My mom even rode in the car with me and our dog Aleah so I wouldn’t be lonely, as Floyd drove the U-Haul.  The story was much the same when it came time to move to Iowa.

As Drake came into the world–their precious first grandchild, my parents were over the moon.  Drake’s entire bedroom was outfitted by them, and just about every piece of clothing our child has ever worn.  They have “fun” picking up diapers because my grandparents would always do that for them.

Now as we head to West Virginia, I know there are still things I’ll need help from my wonderful parents for.  I guess I’ve always felt like a good daughter, and they’ve always treated me accordingly.  My mom always told me when I was a kid, ‘We’ll spoil you until you act spoiled.’  I think I’ve held up my end of the bargain pretty well for 28 years.  My mom always appreciates a good “thank you” note, and it’s gotten to the point I kind of like to write them.  It’s nice to take a moment or two from time to time just to say “thanks” even though “thanks” could never be enough to measure up for all they’ve done for me (and our whole family).  I just hope someday that Floyd & I will have the forethought and where-with-all to be able to provide the same kind of support to Drake that they’ve given us.  They seem to fully grasp the concept of how much more gratifying it is to give than to receive, and I know they feel blessed to do all that they have.  I just hope that in some small measure they realize how much we value their continued love and support.  I know they always offer a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen, and careful advice that is far more invaluable to me than any monetary gift could ever be.  They are the foundation of the family Floyd and I have built.   I couldn’t be more thankful for that.

As I sit here thinking about it, my eyes are just welled and tears running down my cheeks.  God has richly blessed us in so many ways, and the guardians of parents he placed in my life simply could not be better.  I know sometimes we but heads, and we don’t always agree, but I am 100 percent sure that no two other people could be more fit, loving, and doting parents than my mom & dad.  Just to cover all the bases, I’m sorry for things I’ve ever said to upset you, grateful for your overwhelming support, and forever indebted to you for just flat out putting me on this planet to do my best to serve God’s will for my life.

Thank you, guys…Thank you for always loving me and never second-guessing me.  You are the support system every child deserves, and one I’m eternally grateful to have.  God Bless–and cheers to many more years of the amazing journey ahead!

A trip down memory lane!

This week, I’ve been catching up on some of our much needed packing process.  Floyd has a shot glass collection, with glasses he’s picked up all the places we’ve traveled, and several friends and family members have contributed to it as well.  We’re not big drinkers, but shot glasses are oddly one of those little knick knacks you can find at any gift shop anywhere in the world pretty much!  I started taking them down and wrapping them up and it was really a fun trip down memory lane!  I thought about our time in Quincy with the Illinois ones, Kansas and all the great friends we made there with those glasses, as I pulled down glasses from Oklahoma and Dallas I remembered the first “grown-up” vacation Floyd and I took after our honeymoon…and so many other fantastic memories of trips to Kansas City, Florida, South Dakota, job interviews where I picked up glasses for him in Wisconsin, South Carolina, West Virginia…wow—I got to thinking about how this will soon be 7 years of wedded bliss in our marriage, and this fall marking 12 years as a couple!  It is crazy to think how time has flown by.  But Floyd is still my very best friend, and I feel beyond blessed to have shared so many wonderful memories and adventures with him.  Last night before we went to sleep, we were talking about being ready for all the stress of our upcoming move to be over and be able to enjoy our next chapter in the mountains!

And so it begins!

I guess after living in four states in the past six years, Floyd & I have gotten the process of moving down to a science, but boy is it still a lot of work!  I started the oh-so-fun process of packing this weekend.  I loaded up about a half dozen boxes with things we shouldn’t absolutely need to use in the next couple of weeks.  Floyd cleaned out his closet, and I finished going through mine.  Between the two of us, we loaded the backseat of my car with bags of items I then donated to Goodwill.

Even though we still have a good three weeks to go, there is still so much work to be done in such a short period of time!  It’s all still kind of overwhelming, but we are thrilled to begin this new chapter in our lives.  The well wishes from everyone have been incredible, and we feel blessed to have somehow made an impact on as many people as we have.  That’s a testament to God’s faithfulness in our lives, and our willigness to put our best feet forward.  Next things on the to do list:  1) get utilities switched over for Iowa and WV houses 2) finish loan paperwork for the new home purchase 3) figure out insurance stuff for “in between” period 4) hire movers 5) plan a going away party 6) pack, pack, pack!! (not necessarily in that order!)  And I’m sure lots of other things!!! ;)

Seriously?!?

I’ve lived in the Midwest my whole life and have NEVER seen snow in MAY!  Today was just nuts!  I ventured up to Plainfield and back and saw rain, freezing rain/sleet, and lots of snow!  It makes me even more ready to move east, where in my new home city of Charleston, WV it was 80 degrees today!  Here’s a couple pictures from my snow adventure this Thursday.

House hunters!

Whew!  Floyd & I had quite an eventful weekend.  We went on a whirlwind house hunting tour Friday & Saturday in West Virginia.  In amidst it all–we got an offer on our home in Waterloo and were negotiating with the buyer on that deal!  Now, I’m thrilled to report, we’re under contract on both our house here in Iowa and on a beautiful home in West Virginia!  Thanks to our awesome realtors Gloria & Duke on both ends for helping coordinate everything.  It was a great getaway weekend, mini-vacation of sorts, for Floyd & I.  My parents stayed at our Iowa house with Drake so we could maximize our house hunt time.  It was hard to be away from our little man for four days but we had a nice time together as a couple, and got a lot accomplished!  I wanted to share photos of the new house for starters, and I have some other pictures from the trip I’ll share soon!

We’re reminded–All the time, God is good…God is good, all the time!
