It’s not about politics…it’s about respect

* This is NOT a political post. This is not being Republican or Democrat. It is, in my opinion, a very powerful and true statement *

That’s what I forced myself to type underneath a quote last night on social media.  I was sharing a quote from President Obama.  But I knew I needed to type that “addendum” underneath.  In my head if I didn’t…there would be too many comments questioning my political party… accusing me of having “slanted” coverage…listing a million and one reasons why they aren’t a “fan” of President Obama.

And judging by all of the derogatory posts, tweets and memes…I will have to post the same disclaimer when Donald Trump takes office.

And it’s sad.

This is not a blog post about politics.  It is not about who should be in the Oval Office and who should not be.

This is about respect.

Because as I was typing out my “addendum” to that FB post last night…it hit me like a tidal wave.  Somewhere along the way…the OFFICE of the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES no longer gets the respect it deserves.

I want to quote the President of the United States…both today and in two weeks…without backlash.

I wish the talk about politicians would switch to a talk about the issues…and solutions to those issues.

Because right now on social media…it feels like a giant sandbox…full of kids throwing sand at each other and not sharing toys.  And I don’t know about you…but I want out of the sandbox.

I just want the old values to come back.  Where you stand when the National Anthem is playing…your hand goes on your heart when you recite the Pledge of Allegiance…and you respect the President of the United States…regardless of who it is.

So to President Obama…thank you for the past 8 years.  Thank you for leading our country.

And Mr. Trump, best of luck to you as you lead our country the next four years.

No addendum needed.

Amen! In the bible it even reminds us to respect our authority, our leader and pray for them. And whatever happened to treat your neighbor as yourself. I too want out of the sandbox.

I was thinking about ways to stop using Facebook, because of the people that continue to repost things that are not fun and not respectful. Haven’t gotten that accomplished, but I have gotten rid of some negative people. Thanks for keeping the positive in your blog. Enjoy life everyone and learn something new everyday.

Thank you, Amanda. I wish more people felt like you. I am tired of all the hate and back biting. We need to focus on the issues.

It really is sad to see our country so divided by politics. I’m old enough to remember a little bit about WWII and how united the country was when I was little. Never thought I’d live long enough to see bitterness and hate over who is elected president.

  7. Michael McBride says:

Well said. It is time to stop focusing on what divides us and begin the conversations that can unite us.

    Keep writing!
