A Trip to the Zoo

July 26, 2009 4 Comments
Several years ago, long before I met Dwayne, I went with some friends of mine to the Kansas City Zoo.  I had a great time and thought it was the best zoo I had ever been to, although I have fond memories of the Calgary Zoo in Canada.  Every time I mentioned it to anyone, they said “Oh, you have to go to the Omaha Zoo!  It’s the best one to go to.”  Well, I finally made it to the Omaha Zoo.  Dwayne and I met some friends of ours from Sioux Falls there.  We spent the entire day wearing ourselves out and when the zoo closed, we walked across the street and went to see a Triple-A baseball game.  It was a pretty exhausting day.

People mainly go to the zoo to see the fauna,

Tigers are my favorite Big Cat. This guy was not feeling very well and has a sore on his tail, but he was eating and looks pretty healthy (except for the sore).

This Sun Bear looked like he was trying to figure out a way out. It turns out he was waiting for his morning snack.

This Polar Bear is eating a sweet potato. I'm pretty sure that those aren't native to the Arctic.

but there is plenty of flora to see as well.  I didn’t get as many pictures as I should have while we were there, but here are some of them.

I managed to get some ideas in the Butterfly House.

I had a great time, but I’m not ready to say it is the best one, yet.  Dwayne and I are planning on hitting the Kansas City Zoo soon.

Dig it!

Sounds like a great trip. Duluth also has a nice little zoo if you get up that way. Tell me more about the hummingbird nesting material — it looks like something that would be fun to try. Thanks!

It appeared to just be some sort of cotton fluff. It didn’t have any sign with it. I have some cotton from a ball of cotton that we got for the goldfinches and I may just put some of that in a holder. It is pretty densly packed in the ball and it was pretty loose in the one at the Omaha Zoo.

Heard on the news tonight that you were married in the Little Brown Church, Nashua. Tell us about it. Also – really getting thin – go girl.

Karen, The Little Brown Church is beautiful. I was living in Sioux Falls and Dwayne was still in Cedar Rapids. We wanted to get married in Iowa but didn’t want to waste a lot of time and money on a huge shindig. My dad suggested the Little Brown Church. We didn’t have to worry about planning a big wedding and the decorations were already taken care of. And the weather was perfect, of course!
