A weak front is forecast to bring a slight chance of a shower/storm to the area Thursday. At this point the chance of rain does not look very good. Here is the rain forecast from Tuesday evening to Thursday evening.

There is another front forecast to push through the state Saturday. This will give us another chance of showers/storms. Here is the forecast position of the cold front Saturday morning.

Now that the month of July is coming to an end…it is time to look ahead to what August might bring us. The Climate Prediction Center is forecasting more of the same…above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation.

July 31

From NWS
1993
: During a summer of extreme rainfall and flooding the statewide average rainfall for July was 10.50 inches making this the wettest month on record in Iowa. Measurable rain fell somewhere in the state on all but two days of the month. Dubuque and Waterloo set their all-time records for June and July total rainfall, and at Cedar Rapids the total rainfall of 34.4 inches from April through July exceeded their normal amount for the entire year.

1943: A severe hail storm struck the Boone area with a resident writing that “in the city of Boone there was considerable damage to electrick signs, windows and roofs. Two greenhouses lost 2,300 panes of glass. Some automobile tops and some roofs were damaged in the southeast part of town. Crops were badly damaged or totally destroyed on about 200 farms, or on about 8,000 acres of land. Previous to the storm there were prospects of bumper yields of corn, soybeans and hemp, but after the hail some fields contained only short stumps of broken cornstalks.”

This Day in National/World Weather History …
31 July 1861 → The world record for one-year rainfall was set: 1,042 inches at Cherrapunji, India.
31 July 1964 → Country singer “Gentleman Jim” Reeves flew his single-engine Beechcraft plane into a thunderstorm near Brentwood, TN. The plane crashed, killing Reeves and his manager. Reeves was 40 years old at the time of the crash.
31 July 1976 → A stationary thunderstorm produced more than 10 inches of rain which funneled into the narrow Thompson River Canyon of northeastern Colorado. A wall of water 6 to 8 feet high and traveling at 50 mph wreaked a 25 mile path of destruction from Estes Park to Loveland. 156 unsuspecting campers were killed. Ten miles of U.S. Highway 34 were totally destroyed.
31 July 1993 → Alabama finished its hottest July on record since 1895, while receiving less than half the normal rainfall. Meanwhile, the Great Flood of 1993 was reaching its peak in the Midwest and was eventually responsible for 48 deaths and $23.1 billion in damage.

A Lone Storm

A cold front was drifting south and one lone storm developed south of it. Here is the position of the cold front.

The satellite image below shows the lone storm while the rest of the area is sunny to mostly sunny.

One of our Weather Trackers took this photo from near Decorah of  what the storm looked like from the ground.

The radar image below shows how small the storm was.

Keep in mind all the images above were not taken at the exact time but roughly the same time to give you all different perspectives on the storm. As it past over Postville 0.05″ of rain fell.

Here are two satellite images taken one hour apart showing how fast the storm developed. Click on image below to enlarge.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny. High: 87-93. Wind: N 5-10 mph.

Tuesday Night: Mostly clear. Low: 62-67. Wind: NE 5 mph.

Most of the burn bans remain in effect across eastern Iowa except for one. As of 6:00 this evening, the burn ban for Tama County will be lifted. No other changes have been made. Here is the updated burn ban map.

Click here for details on the county burn bans.

A cold front will push south across the state this evening. There is a slight chance for shower/storm to develop before the sun sets. Other than that slight chance of a storm this evening the sky will be mostly clear tonight. Here is the position of the front this afternoon.

There is a small portion of eastern Iowa outlined in the slight risk of severe weather by the Storm Prediction Center. The chance of any storm developing is low so the chance of any severe weather is very low. It is something I will be tracking through the evening.
After the front passes, high pressure will provide us with mostly sunny days…Tuesday and Wednesday. A cold front will bring another chance of showers/storms Thursday. Friday will be dry before another cold front passes through the state Saturday with another chance of showers/storms. Here is the forecast position of the front Saturday morning.

High pressure will bring sunshine to the area Sunday and Monday behind the passage of the front Saturday.

July 30

From NWS
1971
: Unseasonably cool air settled across Iowa on the morning of July 30th with every station in the state dropping below 50 degrees and a few locations in the southwest reaching the upper 30s. At Des Moines the low of 47 F established an all-time July record for that location. The lowest reported temperatures included 39 F at Atlantic and Red Oak and 36 F at Oakland.

This Day in National/World Weather History …
30 July 1997 → Two waterspouts moved onshore in northern Virginia Beach, VA. One tracked into Norfolk.
30 July 1999 → At nine o’clock in the morning Chicago recorded its highest ever dew point temperature of 82 degrees. The temperature at the time was 88, resulting in a heat index of 108. The dew point is an indication of the amount of moisture in the air.
