From NWS
1971: Unseasonably cool air settled across Iowa on the morning of July 30th with every station in the state dropping below 50 degrees and a few locations in the southwest reaching the upper 30s. At Des Moines the low of 47 F established an all-time July record for that location. The lowest reported temperatures included 39 F at Atlantic and Red Oak and 36 F at Oakland.
