September 10

From NWS1976: Unseasonably cool air settled across Iowa resulting in an early frost across the lowlands of Iowa with freezing temperatures reported in some areas. Many stations established daily records including Burlington, Dubuque, and Waterloo. The lowest reported temperatures included 33 F at Anamosa and Sibley, 32 F at Independence, Iowa Falls, and Oakland, 31 F at Grinnell, and 29 F at Elkader. At Grinnell this remains the earliest freeze on record. The cool weather was made even more remarkable by the fact that it came only a few days after very hot temperatures reaching into the triple digits across northwestern Iowa. In fact at Sibley the high temperature was 102 F on September 6th and 99 F on the 7th, then just three days later they reported a low of 33 F on the morning of the 10th. The cool weather did not last past the early morning hours as temperatures rose rapidly during the day across most of the state, and at many stations in western Iowa afternoon highs were 45 to 50 degrees above morning lows, including at Sibley where the low of 33 F was followed by a high of 83 F
