1917: An early killing frost visited portions of about the eastern third of Iowa, with several stations recording an early freeze including lows of 32 F at Fairfield, Iowa Falls, and Waterloo, 31 F at Belle Plaine, Decorah, Keosauqua, and Maquoketa, and 30 F at Fayette. At Waterloo this remains the earliest freeze on record. Considerable damage was done to corn, potatoes, and other late crops.

This Day in National/World Weather History …
 11 September 1961 → Hurricane Carla made landfall and battered the central Texas coast with wind gusts to 175 mph and up to 17 inches of rain. Carla also spawned a tornado which swept across Galveston Island killing 8 people. The Category 4 hurricane claimed 45 lives and caused $2.22 billion dollars in damage.
 11 September 1970 → A significant tornado outbreak struck northeast Italy, including the cities of Padua and Venice. 36 people were killed.
 11 September 1974 → Eastern Air Lines Flight 212 crashed just short of the runway in dense fog while attempting to land at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport. Of the 82 people on board, 72 died, including the father and two older brothers of comedian Stephen Colbert.
 11 September 1976 → Idaho, Oregon, and Montana were drenched with heavy rainfall from the remnants of Tropical Storm Kathleen, which took a rare path across the western United States after striking Mexico.
 11 September 1992 → With sustained winds of 145 mph and gusts to 175 mph,Hurricane Iniki pulverized Kauai. The worst storm in recorded history at Hawaii and one of the 10 worst in US history; it caused between $2 billion and $3 billion in damage.
 11 September 2002 → A tree limb snapped on a windy day in Union County, NJ and and fell on a group of students eating lunch outside. One student was killed, 12 were injured.
