1983: Unseasonably cool weather led to a morning low temperature of 32 F at Des Moines making it the earliest freeze at that location since September 22, 1913. Many areas of the state, excepting southern and southeastern portions, reported lows in the 20s that morning including readings of 25 F at Carroll and Rock Rapids, 24 F at Anamosa, Glenwood, and Ida Grove, 23 F at Atlantic, Boone, and Oakland, and 22 F at Mason City. This early freeze was made even more notable by the fact that it came after one of the hottest Iowa Augusts on record, with Des Moines topping 100 F on eight days and recording an average daily high temperature of 94.8 F for the month. In fact the high of 108 F on August 16th was the warmest reading at Des Moines since the historic searing heat of July 1936, so Des Moines experienced its hottest temperature in nearly 50 years followed only a month later by its earliest freeze in 70 years.

23 September 1551 → The Grand Harbour, located in Valeeta, Malta, was hit by a waterspout which moved inland and caused extensive damage. A shipping armada in the harbor about to go into battle was destroyed by the waterspout killing at least 600 people. 23 September 1815 → The poem “The September Gale,” penned by Oliver Wendell Holmes, was written about a hurricane that struck New England on this date. Holmes was just six years old at the time. 23 September 1983 → Super Typhoon Forrest underwent extremely rapid intensification as its central pressure crashed 100mb in 24 hours.
