Below Normal Temperatures This Weekend

UPDATED at 3:45 PM

Tonight: Mostly clear and colder. Low: 31-34. Wind: NW 5-15 mph.

Friday: Partly cloudy, chilly and breezy. High: 51-54. Wind: NW 10-20 mph.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy and cold. Low: 28-30. Wind: NW 5-10 mph.

Saturday: Mostly cloudy, cold and breezy (NW 10-20 mph). High: upper 40s.

Sunday: Mostly sunny. High: mid 50s.

Monday: Partly cloudy and windy (SW 15-25 mph). High: low-mid 60s.

Tuesday: Partly cloudy with a 20% chance of showers. High: low 60s.

Wednesday: Partly cloudy. High: upper 50s.

Thursday: Partly cloudy and breezy (SW 10-20 mph). High: low-mid 60s.

The cooler and breezy conditions we have been tracking are finally here. The front has now pushed east of Iowa. Here is the surface map from this afternoon.
The temperatures at 3 pm today are in the low-mid 50s…that is much colder than they were yesterday. Here is the 24 hour temperature change.


Below normal temperatures are expected through next week. The coldest day will be Saturday with highs only in the upper 40s. The coldest mornings will be Saturday and Sunday morning as temperatures drop into the upper 20s.

The only chance of rain will be Tuesday as a cold front pushes through the state. Not much moisture with the front so if we do see any rain it will be light. Here is the forecast position of the cold front Tuesday morning.


The Drought Monitor was released this morning and the drought conditions are getting worse. The extreme drought conditions covered 66% of Iowa last week and it is now 75%.

College Football Forecast (Saturday)

Iowa State vs. TCU (Fort Worth, TX):
Mostly cloudy with a 30% chance of showers.
Kickoff Temp: low 60s.
Wind: N 10-20 mph.

Iowa and UNI are off this weekend.

: Unseasonably hot weather brought the temperature all the way up to 97 F at Knoxville tying the all-time Iowa October record that had also been reached at Onawa just the previous day. Other reported high temperatures on the 4th included 96 F at Bloomfield, 95 F at Shenandoah and Sigourney, 94 F at Albia, 93 F at Fairfield, Iowa City, Little Sioux, and Marshalltown, and 92 F at Des Moines, Grinnell, and Sioux City.

This Day in National/World Weather History …
 4 October 1777 → The Battle of Germantown was fought in a morning fog that grew more dense with the smoke of battle, causing great confusion. Americans firing at each other contributed to the casualties during the battle.
 4 October 1987 → Southern California experienced temperatures well over 100F in the afternoon. On the same day, 18 inches of wet, heavy snow fell from eastern New Yorkinto New England.
 4 October 1995 → Hurricane Opal, a Category 4 storm when it was over the open Gulf of Mexico, brought 10 to 15 inches of rain to Alabama and the Florida panhandle.
