Wednesday: Partly cloudy. High: mid-upper 40s.

Today might be our last warm day of the year. These are the records that are in jeopardy. As of this post it looks like we will come just a couple of degrees shy of the records below.

Waterloo: 81 (1899)
Dubuque: 78 (1963) UPDATE: This high today was 78 and it tied the record.
Cedar Rapids: 82 (1899)
Iowa City: 82 (1899)

The front across central Iowa will slowly track across eastern Iowa tonight with showers/storms becoming more likely. The Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk for severe storms across part our area tonight.
Showers and thunderstorm will continue Thursday morning and taper off as we get into the afternoon. Here is the forecast position of the cold front Thursday at 1 pm.
The sky will clear quickly Thursday evening. Rain total from this evening to Thursday evening my exceed 1″ in some locations…mainly across the north counties (see map below).

The front will not move very quickly because the wind in the upper levels of the atmosphere is running parallel to the front. Once the low moves into Wisconsin Thursday the cold front will begin to pick up speed and the rain will taper off in the afternoon.

High pressure will move southeast into the middle of the country and remain there through early next week. It will not be able to move east because of Hurricane Sandy moving north just off the east coast. Here is the surface map Tuesday morning showing the position of the storm near New England and the high in the middle of the country.

High School Football Forecast (This Evening)
Mostly cloudy with a 20% chance of a shower/storm
Kickoff temp: 70s
Wind: S 10-20mph

October 24

From NWS
1927
: A period of dry and unseasonably warm weather brought very pleasant fall weather to most of Iowa from about October 20-28. In general temperatures peaked in western Iowa on the 22nd and 24th and in central and eastern Iowa on the 25th-27th. On the 22nd Little Sioux reported a high of 91 F, one of the latest occurrences on record of such a warm temperature in Iowa. On the 24th Thurman registered a high of 89 F and Des Moines established a daily record for the first of five consecutive days, from the 24th-28th, all five of which remain unmatched more than 80 years later.

This Day in National/World Weather History …
24 October 1933 → A London High Fog settled over the city causing “midnight at mid-day” as a temperature inversion formed, trapping fog and smoke beneath it. The sun turned yellow, red, and sometimes disappeared. A pilot said it looked like a huge black mushroom shrouding the city.
24 October 1992 → Near Flagstaff, AZ, three tornadoes touched down. One tornado tracked across the Crater National Monument.
