: Unseasonably cold weather spread across Iowa with most of the state recording a hard freeze during the morning hours. The temperature at Mason City plummeted all the way to 16 F which was the lowest temperature recorded in Iowa so early in the fall in 29 years. Other reported low temperatures included 17 F at Cresco and Independence, 18 F at Fayette, and 19 F at Charles City, Decorah, Independence, and Waterloo.

This Day in National/World Weather History …
 2 October 1894 → An F3 tornado took four lives as it moved through northwestern sections of Little Rock, AR.
 2 October 1898 → A hurricane striking the Georgia coast washed away Campbell Island. Jekyll Island had a storm surge of 19 feet. It is estimated that this storm was a category 3 hurricane with winds in excess of 130 mph.
