Today might be our last warm day of the year. These are the records that are in jeopardy. As of this post it looks like we will come just a couple of degrees shy of the records below.

Waterloo: 81 (1899)
Dubuque: 78 (1963) UPDATE: This high today was 78 and it tied the record.
Cedar Rapids: 82 (1899)
Iowa City: 82 (1899)

The front across central Iowa will slowly track across eastern Iowa tonight with showers/storms becoming more likely. The Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk for severe storms across part our area tonight.
Showers and thunderstorm will continue Thursday morning and taper off as we get into the afternoon. Here is the forecast position of the cold front Thursday at 1 pm.
The sky will clear quickly Thursday evening. Rain total from this evening to Thursday evening my exceed 1″ in some locations…mainly across the north counties (see map below).

The front will not move very quickly because the wind in the upper levels of the atmosphere is running parallel to the front. Once the low moves into Wisconsin Thursday the cold front will begin to pick up speed and the rain will taper off in the afternoon.

High pressure will move southeast into the middle of the country and remain there through early next week. It will not be able to move east because of Hurricane Sandy moving north just off the east coast. Here is the surface map Tuesday morning showing the position of the storm near New England and the high in the middle of the country.
