    To Peter Soto,
As far as I remember the folloiwng happened:
A failure of one of the O-rings (sealing off the compartments of the solid fuel booster rockets) caused the large fuel tank on which the shuttle sits during launch to catch fire and explode. The failure was caused due to the low ambient temperature at and around the launch pad prior to the launch. The O-ring material properties did no longer meet the requirements and sealing was no longer guaranteed.

I was 6. After the accident I had the honor of getting to know a family member of the crew. It was a national disaster but children lost their parents. National disaster or not, nothing changes the feeling of loosing a dad or a mom, famous or not. Your in my thoughts and prayers E.S.
