Weather Extra Bar

Tonight… The wind will gradually diminish as high pressure moves the middle of the country. Temperatures by morning, in some locations, will reach the single digits.

Wednesday… Lots of sunshine and a lot of wind will be ahead of low pressure to our west. Our afternoon highs are forecast to be 10-15 degrees warmer than Tuesday. Here is the forecast map for Wednesday evening.

Mar 25 Wed Eve Sfc Map

Wednesday Night-Thursday Night… Clouds increase Wednesday evening as showers are forecast to develop after midnight. Scattered showers will continue through Thursday and into Thursday evening. Rain amounts could be around 0.50” in many locations. As the low moves away from Iowa, any lingering rain may mix or change to light snow as colder air settles in Thursday night. All precipitation should be out of the area by sunrise Friday. Here is the possible rain from Tuesday evening through Friday evening.

Mar 25 QPF

Friday-Sunday… A stretch of dry weather and increasing temperatures are just want we need heading into the weekend. I pleasant spring weekend is ahead. The only hitch will be the windy conditions Sunday as temperatures reach the low 60s.

Monday/Tuesday… Low pressure is forecast to bring a chance of rain to the state Monday followed by cooler temperatures (40s) Tuesday.

Just because Sunday will be in the low 60s doesn’t mean the warm weather will last. The 8-14 day outlook shows below normal temperatures and above normal precipitation.

Thundersnow in Linn County

A narrow band of heavy snow for less then an hour has been tracking southeast across eastern Iowa this evening. Areas under that band have seen a quick 0.5-1.0″ of new snow. There have also been a few reports of thunder. Look at the radar image in Linn County this evening. Yep…there was lightning so you were not hearing things. 1

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, windy and cold. High: 23-31. Wind: NW 15-25 mph.

Tuesday Night: Mostly clear and cold. Low: 10-14. Wind: Light.

Wednesday: Partly cloudy and windy (S 15-30 mph). High: low-mid 40s.

Friday: Mostly cloudy with a 20% chance of rain/snow. High: low-mid 40s.

Saturday: Partly cloudy. High: low 50s.

Sunday: Partly cloudy and windy (S 10-20 mph). High: low 60s.

Monday: Partly cloudy with a 20% chance of rain. High: upper 50s.

Weather Extra Bar

Tonight… Scattered light snow or flurries will continue through the evening hours. By midnight the snow would be over and then the clouds will begin to clear. As the clouds clear the temperatures will drop into the teens by morning.

Tuesday/Tuesday Night… Hopefully this will be the last cold day this spring. High temperatures are forecast to be 20-25 below normal for this time of year. A gusty northwest wind in the morning will diminish as high pressure tracks southeast across the Midwest. Here is the forecast map for Tuesday evening.

Mar 24 Tue AM

Wednesday/Thursday… Low pressure is forecast to track northeast across Iowa. Ahead of the low Wednesday through Thursday morning the wind will be strong from the south pushing highs into the 40s. If the track remains over Iowa Thursday, part of Thursday, the wind will be light until the low center is east of the area. At that point the wind will increase from the northwest. Rain will develop in the morning and continue into the afternoon before tapering off Thursday night. Here is the forecast map for Thursday morning.

Mar 24 Thu AM Map

Friday… After the Thursday low pulls away colder air wraps in behind it and any lingering moisture could mix with light snow late Thursday night into Friday morning.

The amount of moisture in this storm could bring about 0.50” of rain.

Mar 24 QPF

Saturday-Monday… This weekend just might be the best weekend we have seen in some time. Highs are forecast to reach the 50s and 60s with dry conditions. We are tracking another weak area of low pressure to bring us a chance of rain Monday.

Weather Extra Bar

The winter just doesn’t want to end. Here are the snow totals for the winter so far:

Waterloo: 57.4”
Dubuque: 61.9”
Cedar Rapids: 42.5”
Iowa City: 35.1”

The all time snowiest winter record is in jeopardy in Waterloo. The other locations are not near the records. Here is the record information for Waterloo:

#1 59.4” in 1961-62
#2 57.6” in 1992-93
#3 57.4” in 2013-14

Tonight… Clouds will increase tonight as the wind becomes light. It is going to be a cold night with temperatures falling into the teens in most locations. Normal lows for this time of year are near 30.

Monday/Monday Night… Light snow/flurries develop in the morning and continue on and off through the evening before ending completely by midnight. Snow accumulations will range from a trace to 3” across eastern Iowa. Here is the forecast map for early afternoon.

Mar 23 1 PM Mon

Tuesday/Wednesday… Plenty of sunshine on the way Tuesday as the cold continues. High temperatures, if you want to call them that, don’t get out of the 20s Tuesday with a gusty NW wind. Wednesday clouds increase during the day as the wind remains strong, but from the south. A south wind pushes high temperatures into the low 40s.

Thursday/Friday… Low pressure will track across the Midwest with a chance of rain Thursday and a chance of rain/snow Thursday night and Friday morning. Highs both days will be in the 40s.

Saturday/Sunday… A warmer weekend is ahead as high temperatures get close to 50 Saturday and possible low 60s Sunday. That is not a typo. It does say low 60s.

The big question is…does the warmer weather stick around? The 8-14 day outlook shows below normal temperatures from March 31- April 6.
