National Heat Stroke Prevention Day

July 31st is National Heat Stroke Prevention Day. Heat stroke is the most severe of the heat-related illnesses and it can be deadly.

On average, more than 35 children die in hot cars every year in the United States. As of July 31, 2018 more than 20 children died in hot cars so far this year. Children’s body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult’s.

It only takes minutes for a locked or closed car to heat up. Within 10 minutes, a car can warm up to 20°. The inside of the car continues to heat up even if you leave the windows cracked.

Remember –  it does not need to be extremely warm outside for your vehicle to warm up. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration suggests not only checking the backseat for children and pets, but to also lock vehicles to avoid children getting into and potentially getting stuck in a hot car.

Heat stroke does not only happen for children. Adults, especially many who work outdoors, can also experience the potentially deadly illness. Even county fair or outdoor festival goers should know ways to avoid heatstroke and other heat illnesses.

Funnel Clouds Sunday

Cold air funnel cloud reports started coming in just before 3 PM from Dike to Waterloo. More funnel reports came in for Tiffin and Coralville between 4:30 PM and 5 PM. Cold air funnels are typically brief, drop a few hundred feet from the cloud base and don’t touch the ground to become tornadoes. Below are some of the pictures shared with KWWL.

Total Lunar Eclipse

A total lunar eclipse is when the Earth passes between the sun and moon casting a shadow on the moon.

The total lunar eclipse was this afternoon across most of the world except for North and Central America.

The moon was officially full at 3:20 PM CDT, so here in the US that doesn’t work since it is still in the middle of the day. NASA provided a live feed of several other sites around the world. Here are a few images of what people saw.

Some Need Rain

The latest Drought Monitor data was released Thursday showing the drought in southern Iowa is starting to get worse. Some locations in southeast Iowa are now reaching Extreme Drought status with dry conditions spreading north.

The map below shows the month of July has been dry across parts of central Iowa. Most locations are reporting 1″ or less of rain. If there isn’t any rain in the area circled soon the drought is likely to spread into that area in the next few weeks.

We have had more rain in eastern Iowa than areas to our southwest and yet we are still a bit below normal.

Approaching Storm Wednesday evening

A broken line of storms was moving southeast across parts of eastern Iowa. The leading edge produced a nice view. No severe weather occurred with the storms.
