Overnight Storms

A few showers and storms have recently developed in southwest Iowa. The outlined area is where more showers/storms are forecast to develop and move east tonight. Heavy rain and gusty wind can be expected with any of the storms.

The map below is a surface map showing the position of the warm front, in the SW corner of Iowa. It is forecast to move northeast overnight.

The low level jet is starting to get stronger and will help feed the storms.

The low level jet stronger later tonight according to the map below. The winds are from the southwest.

The map below shows the storms in SW Iowa developing and moving into central and eastern Iowa later tonight. The map below shows what the radar might look like around 2 AM Saturday.

Hopefully the storms stay below severe limits (58 mph). The storms are forecast to move out of the area as the sun comes up. A few showers might linger until noon. More storms could redevelop across eastern in the afternoon and evening. Again, heavy rain will be the primary concern.

There is a 70% chance of storms across our area for the rest of the night.

Valley Fog

Early Thursday morning the sky was clear and river valleys had some thick fog. The sky was clear and as the sun came up we were able to see the fog on a visible satellite image from GOES16.

Hurricane Lane

The data on the right is from a buoy just southwest of Hurricane Lane near Hawaii. The chart on the right shows how the pressure and wind changed really fast near the eye of the hurricane.

Here is a picture of the eye of a hurricane, NOT “Lane”.  This will give you an idea what part of the storm matches up with the chart above.
